Punctuation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Punctuation marks are written symbols that do not correspond to either phonemes (sounds) of a spoken language nor to lexemes (words and phrases) of a written language, but which serve to organize or clarify written language.
Also related are diacritical marks (or diacritics), which serve to distinguish among similar sounds using the same primary letter symbol, or to clarify emphasis or tone.
Some punctuation marks are similar to their equivalent Western ones, but larger and occupying a squarer area, to suit the characters that surround the mark.

I think this list should be restricted strictly to punctuation marks, namely those marks used to make sentences more readable (comma, colon, semicolon, question mark, etc), not a list of miscellaneous symbols (percent, dollar, etc) - these belong in a different list.
I've always thought that brackets was the generic term but also the "official" term for what is colloquially known as "squre brackets" as opposed to parentheses (round brackets) and braces (curly brackets).
Punctuations are that subset which are used to punctuate a sentence.

LaTeX leaves extra space after punctuation, such as the period which ends a sentence, but, it uses a very simple rule (periods end sentences unless they follow a capital letter) so sometimes it needs a little help in determining when this is required.
The end of such commands is indicated by a nonletter, i.e., a number, a punctuation mark, a space, or the end of the line.
An alternatative is to use braces to terminate the command.

 A+ Reference: Workspaces and Scripts
When an expression, expression group, or function definition is entered on several lines in an A+ session, A+ supplies stars at the left of each line to indicate the depth of punctuation.
In general, these stars are used to indicate the total number of open quotation marks (at most one), braces, and parentheses, and an expression or function definition remains open until they are closed.
If any brackets, braces, or parentheses are open when a function definition is closed, a token error is reported and the definition does not take effect.

Although the "letter key" layout is identical in every version I have seen, there are some differences in the positions of a few punctuation keys, and sometimes in the placement of command and control characters.
Since computer folks type lots of brackets and braces, we shouldn't be surprised that many Dvorak computer keymaps ignore ANSI and place brackets and braces on facing keys (with the braces shifted).
Punctuation key changes have certainly been necessary over the years.

Other Details Involving Preparation of the Verbal Sample   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
As described earlier, PCAD 2000 identifies clause and sentence boundaries by looking for punctuation characters, including period (.), question mark (?), exclamation mark (!), and forward slash (/ -- for intra-sentence clause boundaries).
Similarly, marking an end-of-sentence clause boundary with both a sentential punctuation mark (.?!) and a slash (as in "./" or "/?") should be avoided.
Indentation, page boundaries, and similar positioning which may be of assistance to the person preparing the sample is ignored by the program, and will not (usually) be reflected in the output report.
