  Brachystegia
This isolated community Brachystegia woodland would therefore not constitute a relic of the Mimobo woodland, but rather be a relic of an ancient tropical floral element, which extended across the eastern highlands of Zimbabwe into the Soutpansberg.
The locals are well aware of the fact that this is an isolated community of Brachystegia woodland with its main distribution being north of the Limpopo River.
Further studies are pending to resolve the identity of the second species of Brachystegia.

It still supports much wilderness and it holds around 650 species of bird, many of which are difficult to see anywhere else: it should be possible to see over 300 species in a two week visit.
Many of the specialities are rainforest or Brachystegia woodland endemics.
The purpose of this document is to provide a summary of Malaŵi and its birds for birders interested in the country and possibly planning a visit.

One of the strange features of the Brachystegia trees within these woodlands is that the new leaves emerge without any chlorophyll so appear in various shades of red and brown reminiscent of the fall colours of the northern hemisphere.
Most of the Brachystegia "specials" are usually to be found in these bird parties while the surrounding woodlands appear to be devoid of birds.
The Brachystegia woodlands like all the Miombo woodlands of central Africa are an interesting and worthwhile habitat for birders to visit.

 Vegetation
The flush of new foliage, in spectacular shades of red, is a wonderful sight, and the evening fragrance of the Brachystegia flowers three weeks later lends an air of magic after the heat of the day.
The name "miombo" is the plural for "muombo", the Bemba name for Brachystegia longifolia, a tree which dominates extensive areas of the Zambesian plateau.
Miombo is regarded as woodland, in spite of its closed canopy (with crowns touching), because of its light foliage which allows sufficient light to reach the ground to support a continuous ground cover of grasses and other herbs.

Brachystegia is named after the brachystegia genus, a native to tropical Africa known locally as Miombo.
Brachystegia appears in many southern African countries, but Mozambique’s brachystegia woodlands are much denser and the trees taller than those of its neighbours.
Brachystegia yields the drier parts of the country to mopane woodlands, whose trees are characterised by their butterfly-shaped leaves and fragile seed pods, while the diverse acacia genus occurs in southern Mozambique and among the rivers of the north.
