Bracken’s national anthem asks god to "guard Pacific’s triple star" and some historians have reasoned that refers to Te Kooti's flag and is his oblique support for Maori.
Vitally interested in current events and politics, Bracken stood for (A legislative assembly in certain countries (e.g., Great Britain)) parliament in the Dunedin City seat at the 1879 elections.

Thomas Bracken, the author of the New Zealand National Anthem was born in Clones in 1843, the son of the local postmaster, publican, and grocer.
A plaque was unveiled in Clones County Library on the 150th anniversary of the Waitang Treaty which set up the state of New Zealand, to acknowledge Thomas Bracken as the author of their national anthem.
The young Bracken started work as a chemist assistant, but during the Gold Rush of the 50's he tried his hand at the more adventurous career of gold prospecting.
