Superdistribution (Brad Cox) - book review
Cox sees a fundamental difference between the efficiency of modern industrial manufacturing and the failures of the software "industry".
(Cox uses the introduction of standardised parts into weapons built for the United States military as an example.) With software this means a focus on re-usable software components and a shift from a process-centric approach to a product-centric one.
However much you credit Cox's diagnosis of the ailment afflicting the software industry and his suggestions for a cure, if you are interested in the future of the information economy then Superdistribution is worth a look.

Sandia National Laboratories - Sandia hears superdistribution guru
Cox, developer of Objective-C object-oriented programming language and author of several important books on programming and computer science, said the crisis is that software is too expensive, too scarce, of insufficient quality, hard to schedule, and nearly impossible to manage.
Cox was at Sandia to promote his concept of a way out of the crisis and to try to win converts among Sandia computer engineers and programmers for the concept, which is called "superdistribution." The idea of superdistribution was developed by a Japanese software engineer.
Cox said it will bring about what has been dubbed an "economy of bits," in which electronic property is bought and sold on the world market.

Objective-C is an extension of the C language, developed around 1982-1983 by Brad Cox and Tom Love.
Objective-C is fully compatible with C (a plain C program can be compiled with an Objective-C compiler), but Objective-C is also extending the C base language with a few constructs, such as classes, messages and inheritance.
Those Objective-C specific extensions are based upon Smalltalk, and in particular Smalltalk-76, because the object model used by Objective-C is the one used in Smalltalk-76 (with one particular class being the root class, superclass of both class and metaclass hierarchies).
