We interviewed Brad Rutter the week after his breathtaking victory over Ken Jennings in the Ultimate Tournament of Champions (UToC), one of a half dozen tightly scheduled interviews on a busy afternoon.
In the opening moments of the first game between Rutter, Jennings and Jerome Vered, it seemed like Jennings was going to annihilate the other champions, as he roared through the categories.
And in fact, the buzz around Rutter’s victory hasn’t quite matched the attention attracted by Jennings’ unprecedented march through the Jeopardy record books in 2004, a streak facilitated by a recent change in the rules allowing unlimited play.

Brad was once again on fire, going 30 out of 31 through the first two rounds today, nailing his one Daily Double (a gain of $1,400).
Brad was in a zone over those last five rounds and all three Final Jeopardy!'s, he played the game the way it was meant to be played, and he earned it.
Brad is close, and won't make things easy (nor will Jerome "Buzzsaw" Vered), but in the end, I think Ken will be the last one standing, $2 million richer and leaving no question as to his place in game show (and Jeopardy!) history.

Today, it was Brad's turn to get off to a fast start, as Ken and Jerome both struggled from the beginning.
The second round once again would not be kind to Ken, as he found himself further behind Brad, and watched Jerome go on a tear to pass him for second place.
Brad's response was "Who is (Cecil B.) De Mille?".

Brad was just a buzzsaw, barely giving the others a chance to ring in.
Brad Rutter is the son of a friend of my husband (Brad’s Dad and my husband work together on school board related issues in Lancaster County).
I recall seeing a spot on Brad Rutter recently where he was driving the Porsche he bought shortly after his earlier winnings and he commented that was his only major purchase since becoming "wealthy".

Being the same age as Brad, I was thinking tonight that somewhere in my life I must have wasted some time, because I can't imagine how he accumulated such a wealth of knowledge in our mere 27 years.
Brad is a long time friend of ours and I can assure you that he is a great guy.
Brad deserves a 'thank you' for redeeming Lancaster, PA. Now hopefully the nation will realize that smart people come from Lancaster too- we're not all just a bunch of morons who fly in restricted airspace.

Given the bad performance of the Nifty Nine (which I know Brad was a member of), I'd have to say, watch out Ken. I think a lot of the problem with the Nine (this is just my opinion, and not based on experience) was lack of experience on the signalling devices.
While Brad Rutter is pretty good, I believe Jennings is overall smarter, and faster on the buzzer.
Brad is the only player who has a chance to be (in my mind) considered better than Ken. If anyone else were to beat him, I would consider it a lucky fluke.

Rutter says he's glad not to be as well-known as Jennings.
Rutter kept it all simple: He continued working at his Coconuts record-store job and hanging out with friends.

However, growing up watching and competing in TV quiz programs, Rutter always knew it was his fate to become a quiz show host.

Rutter was demonstrably superior throughout the three-day match, although having played his way through two more rounds than Jennings did surely helped.
