  Brad Silberling at Hollywood.com
In 1989, Silberling and young actress Rebecca Schaeffer were romantically involved when she was murdered by a fanatic admirer.
Silberling hosted a tearful memorial service held at the Warners Ranch, then later married actress Amy Brenneman, whom he met on the set of "NYPD Blue".
In 2002, Silberling produced and directed his first script, "Moonlight Mile." This deeply personal drama was Silberling's response to the tragedy of Schaeffer's death.

 MAGAZINE | FEATURES | Brad Silberling's Moonlight Mile | VOL 27-3 September 2002
Silberling had first written a draft of the script in 1993, in part as a way to process his own experience.
Nonetheless, Silberling was able to direct each shot to the appropriate few seconds of the song, and when he and editor Lisa Churgin met to edit the sequence, they found themselves happily shocked.
Silberling is most proud of "how unusually people express affection and love to each other in the film, and how you feel it as an audience.

MovieMaker Blog » Screenwriter of the Week: Brad Silberling
Silberling, whose directorial debut was the underwhelming live-action Casper in 1995, has found himself a niche in the bordering-on-mainstream indie world.
Born in Washington, DC in 1963, Silberling has worked steadily as a director for film and TV since the ‘80s, busting out his writing chops whenever he has a chance to bring a meaningful story to life.
Moonlight Mile, based on Silberling’s experiences dealing with the murder of his girlfriend, actress Rebecca Schaeffer, was a quiet yet heart-wrenching indie film with an all-star cast of Susan Sarandon, Dustin Hoffman and relative newcomers Jake Gyllenhaal and Ellen Pompeo.

After Brad Silberling had finished making City of Angels with Nicholas Cage, his fiancé was murdered by a maniac for no reason.
Silberling ended up bonding with her parents and it is this experience that has brought to the screen for Moonlight Drive.

SPLICEDwire | "Moonlight Mile" review (2002) Brad Silberling, Jake Gyllenhaal, Dustin Hoffman, Susan Sarandon
Silberling's commentary is 30m on writing, casting alone.
Described as "emotionally autobiographical" by writer-director Brad Silberling ("City of Angels") -- whose actress girlfriend was killed by a stalker in 1989 -- the film is about the apprehensive bond that forms between a young man and the parents of his fiancée, who is murdered in a diner just a few weeks before their wedding.
While their friendship is tentative and unfolds at a natural and respectable pace, one of Silberling's few missteps in "Moonlight Mile" was casting an actress so charismatic and comely (Pompeo is like a steelier Renee Zellweger) that it's immediately obvious she couldn't be anything but a love interest.

Carrey, Silberling and Browning recently sat down with Science Fiction Weekly to discuss what inspired them to make this gothic children's masterpiece, and explain just how tough it was to find the right balance between adolescent-level thrills and adult scares.
Silberling: What's kind of great is when you hear that, it just further validates Daniel's premise of the books, which is that no one listens to the kids.

Given endless wonders of art direction, costume design, and cinematography, Silberling's direction is surprisingly uninspired (in other words, the books are better), but when you add a throwaway cameo by Dustin Hoffman, Law's amusing narration, and Carrey's over-the-top antics, the first Lemony movie suggests a promising franchise in the making.

There is audio commentary by director Brad Silberling, once by himself and once in the company of the "real" and extremely disappointed Lemony Snickert, who has serious doubts and grave concerns regarding pretty much everything from start to finish in the film (one constant lament is that the actors are all throwing their careers away).
