The Nova class project was started shortly after the production of the first Galaxy class starships and was initially intended to serve as a replacement in the far future for the Galaxy class in all of its capacities of science, diplomacy, and warfare.
The class prototype, the USS Nova, likely constructed during the late 2360s, was eventually based on a scrapped plan from the early stages of the Defiant class project; the plan proved sound and, with the removal of some weapons and the addition of more sensor arrays, suitable for the Nova class.

Starship class - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
A starship class is the basic design of a starship.
In most science fiction universes, a ship's class will generally be named after its first ship, known as the class leader or pathfinder.
Classes of starships, like their terrestrial counterpart, are used to save effort and money - it's considerably easier and cheaper to build multiple units to the same set of plans than to develop a new unique plan for every individual starship.

Constitution class starship   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Ships of this class were multi-role, but generally used for exploration and diplomacy; however, they were quite capable in combat against ships of most enemy powers of their time, with an armament consisting of six photon torpedo launchers (four forward-firing, two backward-firing) and three phaser arrays.
It is unknown if the refitted Constitution class is still in service in the 2370s; however, it is likely, considering the continued active service of the Excelsior and Miranda classes, both from the same era.
There is, though, a variant of the class known to be in use, that of a saucer with a normally attached neck from the bottom of which two nacelles are supported by pylons.

Starship Mission Status - Memory Alpha
Starship Mission Status reports are a computer display available to Starfleet officers to brief them on the activities of other Federation starships and installations.
A readout of this nature for Sectors 21538 to 23079 was often displayed on a screen in the observation lounge of the starship Enterprise-D during the mid-to-late-2360s.
The mission status readout was devised by Michael Okuda's art department, and featured the registry numbers, classes and assignments of many Federation starships mentioned during TNG's run.

Star Trek Dimension - Utopia Planitia
Since the facts and design of the Bradbury class, as presented here, are not part of the official Star Trek universe, all information given in "History" and "Specifications" have to be regarded as "non-canon" and are the property of the author.
The middle-sized Bradbury class designed for research missions is therefore the direct predecessor of the smaller Intrepid class and the larger Sovereign class, that adapted the revolutionary new design of the Bradbury and specifically improved it.
For a long time, actually a "Bradbury class" didn't exist, because firstly, only the experimental prototype, the USS Bradbury, was intended to be constructed, and this vessel remained the only ship of its class for many years.

In the fictional universe of Star Trek, the Sovereign class of starships are the most advanced and powerful ships in Starfleet during the mid- to late2370s and the 2380s.
A Sovereign class starship is estimated to have at least 24 decks and measure 689 meters in length, making it slightly smaller than the Galaxy class starship that preceded it, but it is somewhat more powerful, and is equipped with quantum as well as the standard photon torpedoes.
The starship Sovereign was the pathfinder of its class and testbedfor several new technologies like enhanced deflectors and shields; it was considered a failure when it turned out that theavailiable warp cores at that time were not powerful enough to suit the huge energy needs of the ship's systems.

 Class Statistics Board
In many ways there are too many classes here to seem sensible, it's just that somehow Starfleet have constructed 80,000 ships since its founding (due to the ship registries we know) and rather than have certain classes having thousands of ships, I was more comfortable with explaining this with a large number of classes...
If the amounts of ships figure is in brackets, it indicates that further vessels in that class are planned, and the current number is only provisional, this obviously is only pertinent to 24th century classes still under construction.
Final power values given are a fair indication of that class' actual armour and hitpoints capability, and a ship whose power is 100, is there or thereabouts ten times as powerful as a ship that is rated at 10.
