John Andrew Braden was born February 4, 1764/5 in Fairfax Co., VA. His father, Alexander Braden of Guilford County, North Carolina, was a Captain in the Colonial Army and was wounded at Ticonderoga.
He was a flsmith by trade, and his son, Isaac, is reputed to have operated one of the first iron forges in Tennessee at the juncture of the Mountain Fork and Brushy Fork of Poplar Creek.
Andrew Braden died November 19, 1842 and is said to be buried near a large cedar tree on the side of Black Oak Ridge a short distance from Shinliver School.

In 1855 or 1856, the Memphis and Ohio Railroad (later consolidated with the L and N Railroad in 1871) route passed through Joseph P. Braden's property rather than Corcordia, resulting in the emergence of "Braden Station" and the eventual decline of Concordia.
Braden Station's post office was established in 1859 with Christian Hassler appointed the first postmaster in 1860.
The village name was changed to Braden in 1882 when Murrie J. Westbrook became postmaster.
