Topic: Bradley Denton

  The Austin Chronicle Books:Bradley Denton
At this relatively early juncture in his career, Denton is enjoying a respectable measure of commercial and critical success.
Waiting for a Bradley Denton novel is a relatively atypical experience because he has shown a penchant to shift styles dramatically from one book to the next.
And so Bradley Denton, just past 39 years of age, tolerates the withering summer heat and jiggles the wires that will jumpstart his novel and bring it roaring back to life.

 William D. Gagliani
Bradley Denton burst onto the scene with the hilariously over-the-top Wrack and Roll (1986), a writhing alternate history of an America bound by anarchy and set to a pulsing, punky rock and roll soundtrack complete with a full catalogue of song lyrics.
The serious side of Bradley Denton is often disguised by the humor in his stories, and by the oddball qualities of his characters, who still win readers' hearts with their ultimate humanity.
Bradley Denton has been one of my favorite authors since I first read Wrack and Roll, but it was Blackburn which threw me for a loop, blew my mind, and every other chiche you can think of.

According to Peter Denton (COL '03), who coordinated the trip on the Georgetown campus, the students received mostly a warm reception from the people to whom they spoke.

The group, Hoyas For Bradley, is coordinated on campus by Jason McGrath (SFS '02), who was in New Hampshire all week working for the campaign and could not coordinate this trip.

Denton's third novel (after Buddy Holly Is Alive and Well on Ganymede) takes the overworked serial-killer concept and wrings from it a striking depiction of middle-American despair, betrayed innocence, and transcendent hope.
Denton doesn't settle for facile connections between Blackburn's early years and his criminal turn, playing his life off against some Norman Rockwell vision of an America that never was.
Bradley Denton's "Blackburn" is an astonishingly original novel and a complete departure from the over-formulated serial killer genre.

Books: Elvis Lives! (Austin Chronicle . 07-28-97)
Denton did not have to stray too far from home to find these folks held in Luna's sway.
The deep pettiness and peevishness that resides just below the surface of Denton's creations is allowed to romp about the forest as well, and it is this not-so-pleasant side that leads to some tense banter, crushed feelings, and actual conflict.
Regardless, Denton has written a lovely book that is perfect for these languid summer days when a young man or woman's thoughts turn to fancy and looks for an enchanting read to pass the time until moonrise.

DarkEcho Review: One Day Closer to Death by Bradley Denton
Like Dan Simmons and Marc Laidlaw, the only thing that defines Bradley Denton's writing is his ability to brilliantly and repeatedly redefine its direction based solely on his distinctive voice and immense talent.
Denton plays with history in the first novella, "The Territory." Sam Clemens, driven by revenge and guilt, rides with Quantrill's Raiders during the American Civil War as they travel from Missouri to lay waste to Lawrence, Kansas and he is transformed by his experience.
Denton looks at death and affirms life, he looks at the darkness and reveals the light.

 Science Fiction Weekly Interview
Denton's equally impressive, long list of short stories is also eclectic, ranging from SF ("The Territory") to fantasy ("The Sin-Eater of the Kaw"), horror ("Bloody Bunnies") and most things in between.
In a recent e-mail interview, Denton, who will be celebrating his 25th wedding anniversary later this year in Prague, took time out to discuss Laughin' Boy and "Sergeant Chip," a recent novella that has garnered a nomination for the Hugo Award and won the Theodore Sturgeon Award for 2005.
Denton: My hope is that the structure of the novel is inextricable from the story itself.

Bradley Denton's other novels include Wrack and Roll (1986), Buddy Holly is Alive and Well on Ganymede (1991), Blackburn (1993) and Lunatics (1996) along with the collections A Conflagration Artist (1994), The Calvin Coolidge Home for Dead Comedians (1994) and One Day Closer to Death (1997).
Denton smartly approaches the facts from different angles, now providing descriptions of video clips or talk shows, now apparently reporting "therapy transcripts," now reproducing the inane chatting of internet discussion groups.
In terms of suspension of disbelief here and there Denton appears on the verge of losing it, but in the end, being such a competent writer, he always manages to make things credible.

Denton (BLACKBURN, LUNATICS, BUDDY HOLLY IS ALIVE AND WELL ON GANYMEDE), won the World Fantasy Award for two prior collections of short stories, both limited editions from Wildside Press now extremely difficult for anyone but collectors to find.
With "We Love Lydia Love," Denton uses a mild SF staple, the chip implant, to explore the origins of creativity and inspiration, and makes some points about exploitation in the music business as well.
It gave me the opportunity to scoop the journalists who'll be writing my real obituary on a date to be determined later." Given Bradley Denton's sense of humor and outlook, he's right—this is an appropriate end to a collection you'll treasure and revisit often.

Bradley Denton, who grew up in Kansas and now proudly calls himself a Texan, is a modern master of oddball fantasy.
Later, Denton says that that moment set the "literary high bar" for him as a writer, that henceforth his goal would be to give readers the same kind of epiphany he felt when Huck made his decision.
Denton's unique, off-beat brand of humor, his unflinching examination of the fears we dare not talk about, and his skillful writing style combine to give these stories the kick of a wild jackalope.

I had my first encounter with the fiction of Bradley Denton last year in the form of 'Sergeant Chip', his novella in the September 2004 issue of FandSF.
Denton has updated the entire literary toolkit, popped out the old-style analog tapes and dropped in pixilated digital edits to create a hyped-up look at crime, punishment and very good people subjected to very bad people.
Denton seeks to and succeeds at capturing the fractured flickers and fairy tales that comprise our lives.

This time out, Bradley Denton tries his hand at romantic fantasy with the story of Jack, a widower who is finally beginning to reach out again, to a woman he calls Lilith...
The other characters, particularly the women, are all very small and selfish and actually learn very little in the space of a year spent cavorting with a goddess.
I will admit to being left with the feeling that Denton actually knows very little about women, or at any rate, is only familiar with one kind of woman.
