Topic: Bradoon

Bradoon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A bradoon bit is a loose-ring, or rarely an egg butt, snaffle bit used in a double bridle.
The bradoon always lies higher in the horse's mouth than the curb bit used in the double bridle, and is placed above the curb chain.
The bradoon rein should be wider than the rein used on the curb bit, so that it is easy to distinguish the two by feel.

Double bridle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
One rein, the bradoon, is a modified snaffle bit, and it sits above the other bit used in a double bridle, the curb bit.
A double bridle: note the two reins and the bradoon and curb bits.
The snaffle rein (attached to the bradoon), should be thicker than the curb rein, so that the two are easily distinguished by feel.

Forums at the Society - Bit and Bradoon in North America
I noticed that the absence of double reins bridles seems to be limeted to auster issue policies in the ACW and the Frontier Army of the zIndian/SpanAm period, I must agree that the Braddon/curb combo is a standby in the US Army.
Neither is a strong curb in inexperienced hands, the California vaqueros told their young men that when a man could effectively use the powerful spade bits, he should be good enough with his hands not to need to.
The use of the bit and bradoon with one hand, and the method of shifting from one hand to another, is discussed in the films that have been mentioned here on occasion.

The bradoon is a > > very thin snaffle and the curb, well, it's a curb.
I can see > where one might think the braces on a spade "are kinda like" a bradoon, but > they are separate critters with separate action.
I was thinking more along the lines of at the top levels in Bridle Horse competition, you'd see a spade while at the top levels of dressage, you'd see a full bridle.

 Jessica Jahiel's Horse-sense Newsletter
As I quote the article it says,"...the bradoon, a snaffle but with smaller rings, and the actual Weymouth, which is a curb with long shanks." Would this be too crowded in the horse's mouth??
The bradoon is generally thinner (sometimes half the diameter or less) than the normal snaffle that the individual horse would wear, because (you guessed right) a "normal" snaffle plus a curb would put too much metal in the horse's mouth.
The rings of the bradoon are smaller than normal snaffle rings -- again, to avoid interfering with the second bit.

A double bridle consists of a bradoon and a weymouth bit.
The weymouth is attatched to the main headpiece of the bridle, the bradoon to the sliphead.
The double bridle is always used with two reins, the weymouth (curb) rein usually thinner than the bradoon to allow the rider to differentiate between the two.The bradoon should be 1/4'' to 1/2'' bigger than the weymouth (which is your horses usual bit size).

Eggbutt cheek bits stop the pinching which can be associated with loose ring bits. These bits are good for novice riders or horses that are fussy in their mouths, as the cheek reduces any subtle movements felt from the rein.
