  Sandstone Cementation
During burial of an oilfield reservoir sandstone, new minerals crystallise in the porosity between the sand grains.
Sandstones from the 3.5km deep Magnus oilfield in the North Sea are being investigated.
Sandstones from the Brae oilfield in the North Sea are here imaged, as a thin flat and polished slice, in Cathode Luminescent light on a Scanning Electron Microscope.

 Oilfield Casing
The Brent oilfield is one of the most productive parts of the United Kingdom's offshore oil assets, although now in steady decline.
The Brae field is quite unusual in the North Sea context in that it is a conglomerate pile adjacent to a fault scarp, the whole wrapped up with and interdigitated by claystones of the Kimmeridge Clay Formation.
The Kimmeridge is thus both the source rock and the cap rock of the field.

Marchand, A.M.E. and Macaulay, C.I. and Haszeldine, R.S. and Fallick, A.E. Pore water evolution in oilfield sandstones: constraints from oxygen isotope microanalyses of quartz cement.
The quartz cement zones observed in the Brae Formation sandstones, and the pore water history derived for the area studied, is analogous to published petrographic and pore water evolution data from the nearby Brent Group reservoirs and from reservoirs located in the Haltenbanken area on the Atlantic margin offshore Norway.
Considering quartz cement is a major porosity-occluding phase in many reservoir sandstones, and because pore waters both dissolve quartz and carry the dissolved silica to cementation sites, the data presented are valuable for improving the understanding and prediction of reservoir quality development in sandstones globally.

Alexander's Gas & Oil Connections - Many small fields to be developed in North Sea
Conoco for example, has let it be known that it is pushing ahead with the development of the Maclure (formerly known as Gremlin) oilfield, discovered in 1991, where reserves are put at 22 mm barrels.
The Perth oilfield in block 15/21 is forecast to come onstream in April 1998.
While a minimum facilities platform tied back to Brae B, 20 km to the south-west is a possibility, it is more probable that there will be a subsea tie-back.

The block is situated on the western margins of the South Viking Graben, adjacent to Marathon’s West Brae producing oilfield, and very close to the prolific Brae-Miller complex.
This block lies within a heavy oil province, but West Brae produces 22 degree oil with viscosity of 3-5cp from highly permeable Tertiary sandstones, and this is an analogue for the key prospects in 16/6B.
The block is almost entirely covered by 1993 vintage 3D seismic and Iceni is currently engaged in reprocessing a critical area in the east of the block, better to define objective reservoirs.

Skara Brae is a large stone-built Neolithic settlement, located in the Bay of Skaill on the west coast of mainland Orkney (off northern Scotland).
Rough seas and high winds in that year stripped away the grass, revealing several houses, while in 1924 the remainder was uncovered as a result of similar weather.

The Braemar Field is a gas and condensate reservoir discovered in 1985 and located in UK Continental Shelf Block 16/3c in the Central North Sea some 315 kilometers (196 miles) northeast of Aberdeen in a water depth of approximately 125 meters (410 feet).
The field has been developed with a single subsea well tied back to the Marathon-operated East Brae platform 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) to the south where the liquids and gas are processed.
Braemar gas is contracted to the Miller Group and flows into the Brae gas processing and transportation complex.

Sponge spicules and quartz cements have been identified in the shallow marine sandstones of the Fulmar Field, and in the deep water sandstones of several fields with reservoirs in the Brae Formation.
Sponge spicules are abundant in Fulmar and silica cements occur as chalcedony, minor quartz overgrowths and rare quartz veins.
Quartz overgrowths are much more abundant in the Brae Formation but sponge spicules are much less common.

South Brae Field contains oil and gas in the sandy debris which accumulated at the foot of a steep submarine slope.
This coarse sediment was deposited along the western edge of the buried rift valley, in the southern part of the Viking Graben.
South Brae Field was discovered in 1977, its oil being found deeper down than in most North Sea fields, within a maximum of thickness of over 500 metres of reservoir rock.

The new bolt is primarily designed to make the monitoring of joints in difficult locations very easy, improving safety regimes and making major savings in maintenance.
Sparrows Offshore, who use RotaBolt technology on many of the major bolted joints on the cranes that they are responsible for, have extensively piloted the Vision on the Marathon Oil Brae Bravo Platform.
Originally they fitted the Vision on the connecting flanges of a main A frame, and after a 12 month pilot, have now placed a further order to fit them to the booms of the East Brae cranes.
