Topic: Brahmanda Purana

In the News (Tue 14 Feb 12)

  Purana
The Puranas vary greatly in length: the Skanda Purana is the longest with 81,000 couplets, while the Brahma Purana and Vamana Purana are the shortest with 10,000 couplets each.
By definition, a Purana must cover five subjects: the creation of the universe; its destruction and recreation; the principal gods and patriarchs; the reigns of the Manus and the history of the Suryavanshi and Chandravanshi kings.
Sometimes the Vayu Purana is substituted for the Agni Purana or Shiva Purana.

Puranas of Hinduism to be researched as History with an open mind
Vishnu purANa,  considered as the chief authority almost like the Sruti by the followers of viSishTAdvaita philosophy,  was written by Parasara, Vyasa's father.
History for the modern mind is what is available  through archeological research and due to the fashions set by the western traditions, any research of ancient literature  that points to hoary periods several millenia before the common historical era, is looked at with disbelief and therefore not pursued to its logical conclusion.
purANas have the  single objective of talking only about those events and lives of the past which ennoble you and enable  you to a better man. Since history always repeats itself, the purpose of history should  be to learn the lessons of history and do better in the future.

In the Puranas, apart from the story of the Mauryas and others rulers, there is also a reference to the advent of the white man. Critics discount such accounts believing that they could not have written by Vyasa at the begining of the Kali yuga.
It is not easy for people to write works like the Puranas and ascribe their authorship to the great men of an earlier era.
The reading of the 18 Puranas is to be concluded with this Purana which contains a description of the coronation of Rajarajesvari.

According to the Varaha Purana, Adi Varaha manifested Himself on the western bank of the Swami Pushkarini, while Vishnu in the form of Venkateswara came to reside on the southern bank of the Swami Pushkarini.

 Aspects of Karttikeya's Character
A curious aspect of Karttikeya's character, not found in majority of the Puranas, is referred to in the Brahma Purana and confirmed by a single line of the Skanda Purana.
We have noted that in the epics and the puranas Skanda is eulogised as a Kumara and mahayogi.
As the field of conjecture is open, we may suggest that the story is influenced by the Tamil conception of the god Murugan, who not infrequently appears as god, par excellence, of love and revelry.

Which of the 18 Major Puranas is the "Devi Bhagavad Purana"?
I'd mention the Lalita Mahatmyam in the Brahmanda Purana; the Uma Samhita of the Shiva Purana; and the Prakriti Khanda of the Brahma-Vaivarta Purana.
Because Brown acknowledges that the Puranas -- especially the late Puranas -- were very much influenced by Shaktism; however, that Devi is only given absolute *supremacy* in the Devi Mahatmyam and Devi Bhagavata Purana.
The goddess of the "mysterious cloud of light" was originally seen as a messenger of Brahman, then later identified as Uma, who was later came to be equated (in Shakta writings, at least) with Devi as Brahman Herself.
