Braindead (1992 film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Braindead (New Zealand 1992), released as Dead Alive in North America, is an extreme zombie horror-comedy directed by Peter Jackson.
Although it starts with the capture of a zombie-creating creature on the eerie Skull Island, the opening half of the film is a relatively low-key period piece.
In a lawsuit, Bradley v Wingnut Films Ltd [1993] 1 NZLR 415, it was alleged that the comedy horror' film Brain Dead' had infringed the privacy of the plaintiffs by containing pictures of the plaintiff's family tombstone.

 Braindead
Although it starts with the capture of the zombie creating creature the opening half of the film is a fine low-key period piece before spiraling crazily up to the unbelievable final scenes when over 300 litres of special effects blood is sprayed.
Those censors who recognised that the film was a cheerful farce, such as those in Australia and Britain, allowed the film to be shown in its 104 minutes of uncut glory.
Most memorable is Lionel's charge into the zombies with a lawn mower, before facing down his mother with an over the top Freudian 'rebirth' as he cuts his way out of her grotesquely changed form.

This film is gross beyond belief, with bloody murders after bloody murders, followed closely by bloody decapitations, bloody maimings and dozens of other novel shots of zombies killing, chomping and gnawing their way into others.
JoBlo could not take the whole film, and had to be relieved of her duties as shotgun watcher, as the film progressed with only me holding a barf bag to my side.
The filming is scheduled to begin in May 1999 in New Zealand, with the first episode due for Christmas 2000 release.

Set in 1950's Wellington, New Zealand, Braindead follows the path of Lionel, and his adventures with the ever-growing undead after a 'Sumatran Rat Monkey' infects (and zombifies) his mother after a trip to the local zoo.
Braindead is a true masterpiece - the combination of extreme visuals and cheesy tongue-in-cheek comedy is very rare to have in such concentrated amounts.
It is definitely not a film for everyone - fans of the hard-stuff should really enjoy it, but if your girlfriend doesn't particularly like gore and you've just eaten something "rich and creamy", I'd probably give it a miss.

 Braindead (Dead Alive)
As with his previous films, jackson has used the elements of comedy and horror to provide us with this stunningly gory masterpiece.
This film was released in the US under a different title (DEAD-ALIVE) and with massive cuts, whereas the censors over here in the UK were decidedly lenient because they actually understood the humour involved.
The film was released in the UK with a 18 certificate with no cuts at all.

 Braindead (1992) (aka Dead Alive)
A highly successful blending of horror, comedy and romance, Braindead is a showcase for Peter Jackson's talents and a wild ride of gore.
He can't bring himself to kill any of them (since Vera is one of their number) yet the increasingly desperate lengths to which he has to go to keep them secret are incredible.
Overall Braindead is a dynamite combination of outrageous humour and graphic violence (against zombies) which leaves the audience and cast knee-deep in blood and body parts.

The FreshSite: Film: Reviews: Braindead (1992)
The film is built around the simple story of young, clumsy Lionel (living in an old Victorian mansion with his destructively controlling mother) who becomes the subject of a tarot inflicted crush from neighbour girl Paquita.
The film is arguably the most bloody (when it comes to volume) of all horror movies ever, but even though the film carries a lengthy sequence of fairly repetitive action, it always stays on top of its game.
But with that said, this film is so professionally conducted and has a thematic ambivalence too it that won't offend people who're able to see it in artistic light.

Although short, the films already had the spectacular trademark that would make Jackson famous: impressive special effects, made at a very low cost.
His dreams of becoming a film director didn't die, and after purchasing a 16mm camera, Jackson began shooting a science fiction comedy short that in three years grew to a seventy-five minute feature called Bad Taste, funded entirely from his own wages.
A friend of Jackson's who was working in the movie industry convinced him the film had commercial prospects and arranged for it to be shown at the Cannes film festival, where it won much acclaim, and a number of prizes.

The film ain't much on plot either, as it's pretty much just a series of comic scenes involving Lionel's attempts to keep the zombie outbreak a secret, and then their collective attempts to simply destroy them.
The single best gore effect would have to be towards the beginning of the film, when the nurse gets her head ripped off.
But don't neccesarily expect something frightening because of this, the movie is overall more funny than scary, from the ridiculous premise for the zombies' origin (a cursed Samarian rat-monkey imported to New Zealand) to the myriad bizarre and quirky characters and of course a lot of gross-out humor.

If you're not a connoisseur of graphic horror and gruesome gore, you'd better steer clear of Braindead, a wicked 1992 horror-comedy from the demented mind and delirious camera of writer-director Peter Jackson, years before he went on to mainstream success with The Lord of the Rings.
The ingenious, bloody and imaginitive ways in which the increasing number of zombies die is testament to the skill and humour of the model-makers (no CGI here!)as well as the producers.
Despite the film being populated by a whole range of bizarre characters (living and undead)the film has both a romantic storyline and a family-feud story to provide a pretty solid and convincing backdrop to what essentially becomes a special-effects bloodbath.

The film is a work of perverse genius.
Peter Jackson has a real affinity for the sheer banality of Kiwi culture - of baked bean lunches, of plaster garden gnomes and bathroom ducks, the trams, the brand-name cleaning powders - all recreated here with a loving nostalgia that no other New Zealand filmmaker has yet quite succeeded in tapping.
