Braindead (1992 film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Braindead (New Zealand 1992), released as Dead Alive in North America, is an extreme zombie horror-comedy directed by Peter Jackson.
The first scene of the movie sets up the danger of the Sumatran Rat-Monkey, a hybrid resulting from the rape of tree monkeys by plague rats: An explorer returning from the depths of the island with a rat-monkey in a cage is stopped by his native guides.
The movie was finished under budget with $45,000 remaining.

Braindead, following in the gory footsteps of Peter Jackson's first film, "Bad Taste", has more gratuitous violence and carnage than any movie I can think of, yet it keeps the viewer laughing till the end.
The actors did an exceptional job, considering the type of movie that this is. Timothy Balme (Lionel) is a very believable, timid hero, reminiscent of Robert, the protagonist hedgehog in "Meet the Feebles".
Braindead doesn't exactly fit into the mainstream standards, with its violence and such, but its range of viewers is much larger than his previous films, because there is a lot more humor.

When a friend of his parents bought him a super 8mm movie camera (because she saw how much he enjoyed taking photos), the then eight-year-old Peter instantly grabbed the thing to start recording his own movies, which he made with his friends.
A friend of Jackson who was working in the movie industry convinced him the film had commercial prospects and arranged for it to be shown at the Cannes film festival, where it won a lot of acclaim, as well as a number of prizes.
The movie soon became a hit because of its bizarre humor and overdose of special-effects, some realistic, some hilarious because of their amateuristic look.

My favorite however is a comedy/gorefest classic titled Braindead (released as Dead Alive here in the states).
We start Braindead by watching a zoo expedition that has captured the legendary and elusive “Sumatran Rat Monkey”.
Now the “bloody”: Braindead is said to be the bloodiest film of all time, measured by the amount of fake blood used during filming.

 Braindead (1992) (aka Dead Alive)
A highly successful blending of horror, comedy and romance, Braindead is a showcase for Peter Jackson's talents and a wild ride of gore.
He can't bring himself to kill any of them (since Vera is one of their number) yet the increasingly desperate lengths to which he has to go to keep them secret are incredible.
Overall Braindead is a dynamite combination of outrageous humour and graphic violence (against zombies) which leaves the audience and cast knee-deep in blood and body parts.

If you're not a connoisseur of graphic horror and gruesome gore, you'd better steer clear of Braindead, a wicked 1992 horror-comedy from the demented mind and delirious camera of writer-director Peter Jackson, years before he went on to mainstream success with The Lord of the Rings.
The movie's central character is a poor schmuck named Lionel who's practically enslaved to his domineering mother.
And the whole movie climaxes with hundreds of zombies crashing a party, and a spectacularly gory sequence involving a, uh, lawnmower and chainsaw.

Without the devastating and revolting events of this movie Lionel might never have plumbed the depths of his own tremendous capacities, both for violence and for tenderness.
He has seen her savage living men, devour a full grown dog, and chew on her own detached ear and still he cares for her with the same devotion he lavished upon her all his life.

The FreshSite: Film: Reviews: Braindead (1992)
The film is built around the simple story of young, clumsy Lionel (living in an old Victorian mansion with his destructively controlling mother) who becomes the subject of a tarot inflicted crush from neighbour girl Paquita.
The film is arguably the most bloody (when it comes to volume) of all horror movies ever, but even though the film carries a lengthy sequence of fairly repetitive action, it always stays on top of its game.
The special effects are nothing short of extraordinary (especially taking the budget into account) and the creativity and vision with which the most graphic scenes are manufactured are simply amazing.

Dead Alive has been called by some “the most banned movie in the world”; however, considering how readily available the film is, that hardly seems likely, though one could certainly understand how it might earn the reputation.
