Topic: Brainfreeze (album)

  DJ Shadow News
The CD is without a record label, like Brainfreeze was, the only indication is the "One29 Recordings," which is how many records were used to make this mix.
Shadow is feverishly working on the new solo album-- which is still slated for release on MCA in September.
Future Primitive is releasing a compilation album called URBAN REVOLUTIONS on February 12th, and it features a "Dance The Slurp" interlude taken from the Last Brainfreeze performance, where actual Slurpees were passed out to the crowd.

Now that the music industry has wholeheartedly assimilated the mix album into its bag of tricks, it's easy to forget that the mix tape is more than just a promotional vehicle.
What DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist do with Brainfreeze is to add a historical dimension, capturing a brief but brilliant history of the funk 45 in their dizzyingly paced 50-minute album (done in two uninterrupted takes).
Brainfreeze – with two of hip-hop's most imaginative DJs working together – is a blueprint for creative collaboration.

Brainfreeze began life when Shadow and Cut learned of an unusual 7-inch called "Dance the Slurp." Released by the 7-Eleven corporation in the '70s as part of a promotion for its Slurpee drinks, the 45 actually had a drum breakdown on it, making it instantly interesting to the two funk aficionados.
The Brainfreeze album has taken on the life of a rare 45 -- desired, treasured, eagerly traded for, etc. The parallel has not escaped Cut and Shadow.
Brainfreeze 2 is in the works for later in 2000, and the duo is using another unusual 45 as the project's inspirational cornerstone.

As a musical artist, Davis is a truly exceptional example of modern culture as he weaves and puts together his tracks with such precision and craft that its difficult to fault the man. Do not expect to hear an 'Endtroducing Pt 2', as it does'nt have many similarities with that record.
This is perhaps one of 'the' albums of the 90s as it represents all that is good about dance/hip-hop music.
The effect that Davis had on this project stands as a credit to him, because this is still an incredibly good album that mixes all the good elements from the 90s music scenes and melds them together in a futuristic, hip-hop, techno, trip-hop style.

A collaboration between icon DJ Shadow and Jurassic 5 turntablist Cut Chemist, Brainfreeze was a one-hour throwdown comprised largely of rare funk and soul 45s.
The album's first track gets off to a slow and clichéd start with the standard self-referential samples and exhibitions of scratching speed.
Obviously attempts to recreate the popular "Doin' the Slurp" sequence from Brainfreeze, the results vary from successful (a folk-and-brass solder job on "The Real Thing") to near unlistenable (revving motorcycle noises are, unsurprisingly, sort of hard on the ear in any context).

The music splits the difference between the groundbreaking, Brian Eno-worthy soundscapes that have characterized DJ Shadow's solo career and the ebullient, breakbeat-savvy, street-corner jive of old school-style rap, as exemplified by Chemist's crew Jurassic 5.

The album was a personal journey for a nerdy record collector who dedicated his art not only to hip-hop, but the funk, soul, and rock musicians who inspired him to create his own sounds.
The album version is at a slower tempo than that of the circulated MP3; also new are a number of extra samples, which help add an eerie element to the song about a ghost.
Throughout the album are interludes taken from old records called Recordios, homemade recordings that were the 1940's/1950's equivalent of voice mail.

The music seems moody but without being almost depressing (DJCam's Mad Blunted Jazz album [also from 1996], which I like a lot, is this way so i have to be in the right mood to listen to it).
Most of it sounded like that smooth jazz crap that pollutes doctors' waiting rooms nowadays and the few songs that were very good.........at the beginning of the track (and in the samples), had the same piece of music monotonously repeated through the entire track--zzzzzz.

Inaugurating Rejoint is the resurrection of the extremely rare Jungle Obsession album by the late Italian composer Nino Nardini.
A so-called "library record" (albums recorded and lent to radio, television, and film companies for use as cheap background music), Jungle Obsession has some similarities to the exotica-inspired lounge albums by Martin Denny and Les Baxter in the late '50s.

As such, the album doesn’t properly open until track 4, the banging ‘Break,’ which reminds you once again why you love J5 so much after the disappointing first few songs.
Following on from this track, the album really takes flight and its middle section has to rank as one of the strongest selection of tracks this year.
What holds it back from being as good as “Quality Control” in particular is just its cohesion as a whole album; many of its individual songs are undoubtedly stronger than their counterparts but as a start to finish listen, “Power in Numbers” does not quite stand up as well as its predecessors.

May 19, 2005 - It's hard to believe that despite having laid his scratch down on albums by Ozomatli and Jurassic 5, not to mention his legendary Brainfreeze collaborations with DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist has never produced a bona fide solo album of his own.
All of which means that the music on the album will traverse between Brazilian samba ambiance to rock, funk, and brash electronic bang.
Cut Chemist recorded a chunk of the album with a group of musicians in Brazil, plus it marks his shift from the traditionalist oriented MPC to a proper studio environment.
