Brainiac generated a buzz as the live act to see that resulted in opening for Beck and receiving offers from some major labels.
In 1997 they released an electronic-based EP called Electro-Shock for President which turned out to be their last record: Tim Taylor was killed in a car accident on May 23rd, 1997 while driving back from a recording session for their fourth album, supposedly due out on DreamWorks Records and the group disbanded.
Brainiac's motivation to include the Moog with their sound is due to Taylor and Monasterio hearing "Shake It" by David Bowie at a party.

In the middle of Brainiac's set someone (maybe the same heckler) shouted "Devo!" Well, that is a very obvious reference point for the band, as are another weirdo electronic Ohio band, Pere Ubu.
Basically Brainiac are a punk band that employs weird synth effects to bring the noise instead of guitars.
No band currently gigging on this planet has cooler packaging than Man or Astro-Man?; their records are almost worth purchasing on vinyl for the album covers alone, even if you never put the record on.

Brainiac celebrate weirdness and the band's live show is strange not only for the fact that they play clever songs like “Sexual Frustration” and “Vincent Come on Down,” but that it sure doesn't look like they could possibly be making the out-of-tune ruckus sound so good.
The translation was a bit thin because the CD is full-on electronica, but Brainiac is filled with gimmickry and the band pulled it off thrift-store style.
So the only gripe of the night was that for a band with so much eccentric energy, there was simply no reason to run out of steam and cut the freakout short.

They create a cartoony brilliance, in a way that Brainiac perfected in rock (it is not ironic that I first encountered the band via a Disney music video, coupling their song "Rolling" to an old fl and white melee).
And no, the band does not received automatic praise because we have some of their prizes to give away (although my timing is a bit suspicious, eh?).

May 97: Brainiac came over to the UK for what was tragically to be their last tour.
One band I think are operating in a similar realm at least in the sense of merging rock and electronica is Trans Am.
Tim was the band’s prime mover, but latterly guitarist John Schmersal had been instigating a lot of the writing, especially the electronics, and I hear he’s released a single on All City but haven’t yet tracked down a copy.

Schmersal was the guitarist in Brainiac, a bunch of hyperactive twentysomethings from Dayton, Ohio, whose tincture of angular guitar clang and analog synthesizer abuse was the talk of the American underground rock scene nearly a decade ago.

Brainiac's Daughter has something special, though, although I'm not sure what exactly "it" is, where we appeal to all sorts of people, age groups, and musical tastes.
They've always been one of my favorite bands, and naming our band after one of their songs seemed like a fun way to acknowledge them.
I think he took a special liking to our band because some of us in the band are from Wisconsin and he spent time in the state penitentiary there.

This six-song EP shows the band experimenting with an all-synthesizer approach to loud and angry rock that, despite a few weak points, Brainiac manages to pull off.
Moments like these make one wonder whether a rock band like Brainiac really has any sense of history in regard to electronic music or if the brainiacs think it all started with Reznor's appropriation of `80s industrial music.
Though Brainiac definitely gives us something to look forward to, it might be wise to wait for the full-length album.

The band was super-talented and had good stage presence, especially the front-man. While their musical ability was very impressive, their musical creativity was not.

hen bands begin experimenting with different, unfamiliar sounds that lead them in new directions, often times the change can be traced to the fact that they've recorded the same song over and over again.
Yasuda lends her vocals to a number of songs, and with a voice reminiscent of Cardigans singer Nina Persson, her songs serve as funky, mid-tempo departures to Schmersal's often jerky, askew guitar doodles.
The band hype thing is just pulp for people other than New Yorkers to read; it's got nothing to do with living here, and has little bearing on my life other than that I happen to play music, and people ask us this question all the time.

Megan seems to have a decent set of pipes when her voice is set to singing (and not getting down on the venue staff or members of the other bands) and the addition of stand up bass was also a real treat.
The band seems to borrow from mid-nineties indie rock staples, especially Archers of Loaf and Superchunk, which is never a bad thing.
Maybe this band is just one of those unique groups that play better on another team’s field, or maybe their home field (since Covington is just over the bridge from Cincy) was also packed with friends wanting to buy them pre-show drinks.
