There are some nice songs on this album but I'm very confident that it would have been stronger had the songs been left in demo form as George wanted them to be.
It's an exceedingly enjoyable album which I hope shoots to straight to Number 1, because it definitely deserves to be there and maybe if it does, the "suits" at Capitol will get a clue and get the old albums re-released, and maybe finally get cracking on George's Anthologies.
Brainwashed is a recording of George, his son, and a couple of close friends doing what they loved one last time.

Brainwashed is the final studio album by George Harrison and was released in 2002, almost a year after his death at the age of 58.
Harrison's final work on the album was done at a recording studio in Switzerland shortly before his trip to the United States for cancer treatment.
Brainwashed received outstanding reviews upon its November 2002 release, just as a live tribute of Harrison by an assembly of his musical contemporaries, entitled Concert For George, took place at the Royal Albert Hall.

In Music We Trust - George Harrison: Brainwashed
The album reveals that even as death drew near following years of fighting throat and brain cancers and a life threatening knife attack, Harrison was in light spirits -- as if working in his cherished garden.
Brainwashed is relaxed, sunny and alive with Harrison's distinctive vocal timbre reaching the highs while his guitar plays breezy, clean and compelling melodies.
"Brainwashed in our childhood/brainwashed by the schools/brainwashed by our teachers/and brainwashed by all their rules--God God God/someone turned out the spiritual light," Harrison sings in a final outpouring that urges us to wake up and see the light, both realistically and spiritually.

His new album, Brainwashed, was the project he had been working on when he succumbed to cancer in late November of last year.
Although he spent much of his life searching for reasons and meaning, this album shows that even at the end of his life he was no closer to a complete understanding than he was at age 20.
The final song on the album, "Brainwashed," is a juxtaposition of musical, poetic and religious genres that leaves the listener a little uncertain as to what Harrison was trying to accomplish.

When the album was reissued in 2000, George admitted to feeling uncomfortable with the huge production, saying that he would have liked to remix the songs.
His voice took a turn for the worst, he was splitting with wife Patti, the album got its fair share of abuse, and his Dark Horse tour was an unmitigated disaster (wasn’t he being pelted with stuff at one point?).
Brainwashed is still a solid album, just not an album to put on unless you’re in a reflective mood.

Brainwashed is, after all, an album nearly 15 years in the making: its opening track, the tropical "Any Road," dates back to the heady, healthy days of Cloud Nine, Harrison's 1987 release and, prior to Brainwashed, his most recent album of new material.
Although the songs on Brainwashed are rarely as broodingly introspective as some on the earlier album-"Beware of Darkness," "The Art of Dying" and "All Things Must Pass" come to mind-Harrison stitches together their often droll tales with his characteristically pragmatic spiritual outlook.
Nowhere on the album is that spirit stronger than on his final song, the title track, which is both Harrison's most scathing and most instructive composition.

Contained in the box are all of George’s studio albums released after the fold of Apple Records in the mid-70’s, up until the time of his death (not including a “best of” compilation and his work with the Traveling Wilburys).
Upon release in 1981, much of the album’s warm reception was due to the touted “Beatle reunion” of George, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr on the tribute to recently slain band mate John Lennon, “All Those Years Ago” (which made it all the way to #2 on the singles chart).
Sean Penn. Having been George’s first album issued in the CD era, I find this to be a bit jarring, in that I’ve only ever known it in CD form (I guess on the other catalog reissues, bonus cuts are so commonplace as to be near obligatory).

 George Harrison - Brainwashed
For me, “Brainwashed” really kicks in with the 4th track, “Looking For My Life.” In this song, George implies both the 1999 knife attack and his battle with cancer without making direct reference to either, resulting in a powerful effect on the listener.
On this album, George is active, engaged and involved in making some of the best music he’s ever made at a time when he certainly had enough distractions.
This is counter balanced by a spoken piece and Indian chant which elevates the track and serves as a fitting coda to the album.

Cloud Nine (George Harrison album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cloud Nine is the successful 1987 comeback album by George Harrison, recorded and released after a five year hiatus from his recording career.
In October, Harrison's unlikely cover of Rudy Clark's obscure early 1960s song "Got My Mind Set on You", accompanied by a humorous video, was released and stunned everyone by reaching #1 in the US and #2 in the UK - heights Harrison had not achieved in almost fifteen years.
A few short weeks later, Cloud Nine was released with very high anticipation and was promptly lauded by critics worldwide as Harrison's best album since All Things Must Pass in 1970, sending it to #10 in the UK and #8 and platinum status in the US.

Harrison's final album, Brainwashed, doesn't stray from the mid-tempo groove worn so deeply over the last quarter century, but thankfully, it veers away from its predecessors in at least one major way.
The sad thing about Brainwashed is that for the first time in as long as one can remember, it leaves the listener with high hopes for what Harrison would have done next.

He was recording all the while, yet he died before completing the album that would have been the follow-up to 1987's Cloud Nine.
Posthumous efforts often feel incomplete, Harrison's albums were frequently inconsistent, and Lynne favors ornate, cinematic productions that run contrary to George's desire for this project to be simple and low key -- nothing that would suggest that Brainwashed would be a success.
Yes, it doesn't achieve the splendor of All Things Must Pass, nor is it quite of its time like both Living in the Material World and Cloud Nine were, but it's a quiet, subtle gem, one that strikes close to the heart of Harrison's music.
