Scientific American: What is the function of the various brainwaves?
Alpha brainwaves are slower, and higher in amplitude.
In summary, there are four brainwave states that range from the high amplitude, low frequency delta to the low amplitude, high frequency beta.
Research has shown that although one brainwave state may predominate at any given time, depending on the activity level of the individual, the remaining three brain states are present in the mix of brainwaves at all times.

Brainwaves and the EEG: The Language of the Brain
Neurotherapists believe that alpha brainwave training may be helpful in treating people suffering from conditions similar to hypervigilence such as PTSD, and having low alpha.
In the future, employees involved in complicated, stressful tasks might wear biofeedback equipment all the time so they could 'turn on' the higher-frequency brain waves when they need to and come to a complete rest  between tasks to keep burnout low.

Overview of the Science Behind Brainwaves - Transparent Corp - Neuro-Programmer 2
With the discovery of brainwaves came the discovery that electrical activity in the brain will change depending on what the person is doing.
For instance, the brainwaves of a sleeping person are vastly different than the brainwaves of someone wide awake.
Researchers have found that not only are brainwaves representative of of mental state, but they can be stimulated to change a person's mental state, and even help treat a variety of mental disorders.

EEG, the brain, brainwaves and the use of essential oils.
To measure brainwaves electrodes are placed onto the scalp using the EEG, but recordings can also be taken on the exposed surface of the brain and are known as electrocorticograms (ECoG) while thin needle electrodes can also be placed into the tissue of the brain to make recordings, which is referred to as depth recordings.
Theta brainwaves occur between 4 - 7 Hz and are mostly found in children, but can be found in adults in times of emotional stress, and specifically when disappointed or frustrated.
It is the brainwave patterns that are influenced by the use of essential oils in aromatherapy, and for this reason it is clear to see why people suffering from epilepsy should be careful in the use of essential oils.

  Brainwave States
Theta brainwaves are even slower in frequency and represent a state of deep relaxation and meditation, enhanced creativity, stress relief, light sleep and dreaming.
Delta brainwaves are the slowest in frequency and represent a state of deep dreamless sleep.
While Delta brainwave states usually only occur in deep sleep, it is possible to train yourself to remain awake while reaching the Delta state to experience even deeper levels of meditation and awareness.

Her idea, yet to be proven viable for commercial application, assumes that brainwave signals, like fingerprints, vary slightly from person to person, even when they think alike.
While people may be tricked into giving up their passwords, smart cards may be lost or stolen, as can biometric templates stored on computers for comparing eye or fingerprint scans, so-called "pass-thoughts" are unique.
Whereas slight differences in brainwave patterns created difficulties for researchers trying to build universal tools that could translate thoughts into computer commands, these peculiarities make brainwaves ideal for security applications, Thorpe said.

The experiment is based upon the application of some pattern recognition techniques (through these techniques data - or patterns - are classified basing on a previous knowledge, or basing on statistical data retrieved from the patterns themselves), and it's inspired by our brain ability of perceiving and distinguish different audio samples.
The experiment is presented as an interactive music performance, and the aim of BrainWaves is not onlu to understand neurons' activities but also to construct a musical 'product' with its own aesthetic significance.
