Brake run - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Brake runs may be located anywhere along the circuit of a coaster and may be designed to bring the train to a complete halt or to simply adjust the train's speed.
Trim brakes are often either added for safety reasons, to lower G-forces in certain areas, or for maintenance/mechanical reasons, to lower the cost of wear-and-tear caused by the trains travelling at faster than normal speeds.
When the brake is engaged, the skid raises and friction against the underside of the train causes the train to slow and eventually stop.

Bicycle Rim and Coaster Brake Performance Paper
Brake operation was normal in every respect, but even with the low level of power absorption the shell became painfully hot to the touch, estimated 180F or 120F rise.
At the end of the run the hub was still smoking hot, the temperature indicators were reduced to ashes, the shell's chrome plate had turned to white powder outside the brake disc area, and the wheel required about 10 lb-ft of torque to turn it.
The steel stationary brake discs were flened, had been forced elliptical by the torque between them and their flat-sided mandrel, we distorted where the mandrel flats contacted them, and were jammed on the mandrel.

Fit the brake balance valve into the plate on the inner offside chassis rail and the T piece to the rear of the inside of the chassis in the JBA location point.
Now run the new brake piping along the offside of the chassis, drilling small holes and pop riveting pipe clips to the chassis, remember that these have to be fitted to the inside of the chassis.
The T piece is used to distribute brake fluid to offside and nearside rear wheels along with the flexible brake hoses.

You can either keep the brake bias valve, and simply use the existing run to where the flexible hose is, or put a male to male adapter on the line in place of the bias valve.
At the rear, where your brake line terminates at a bracket where the flexible hose is, put in the flex hose, then connect a short fabricated male to male brake line.
The obvious point is to not run the brake lines or position the brackets where the wheel or tyres can hit them, or where the steering arm can rub against them.

Trains must be able to complete the run (or block) after leaving the brake run from a stationary position.
A brake run can be un-reliable in wet conditions, as the brake fins can not be gripped by the brakes.

No brake job is complete and professional unless the brake rotor has a true flat surface and a surface finish within manufacturer's specifications.
The first "On-the-Car" brake lathes were designed to eliminate the need to remove the rotor, by turning "On-the-Car." The use of trapped rotors however was limited to a relatively small percentage of the total cars in North America, and the use of "On-the-Car" lathes was not widespread.
Another benefit is that the brake rotor is machined in exactly the same plane as the plane in which the pads operate.
