My job was head brakeman (riding in the engine) at first, because we only worked when someone laid off and then the brakeman with the most seniority would work the job as rear brakeman or the job of swing brakeman and the brakeman with the least amount of seniority road in the engine.
The conductor and three brakeman slept on the caboose at the end of the away from home trips, and the engineer slept in the bunk house.
Once you got the trust of others they would stick up for you and you for them, no matter what kind of trouble you got into on the job (side swiping cars, shoving over a derail, or off the end of a track, or a derailment) you were then in the railroad family.

No Brakemen are actual brakeman, they are qualified conductors that don't have enough seniority to hold a regular conductors job.
Brakeman, Flagman, Baggageman etc. It was sinmply a matter of local terminology.

I've talking with some club racers that have tried out the brakeman pads, as well as some of the viper guys (they are really tough on pads, cause their stock braking system is woefully inadequate for hard track use given the car's weight and hp).
The brakeman pads (or my R4 track pads for that matter) don't match the sheer braking power and high temp properties of the Hawk HT10's, the Hawk Blues, and the PF 97's (as well as the prior 93's and 90's).
I think the Brakeman #3's I ran on my M3 were about as close to an all around pad as you could get at the time.
