Low numbers of Desert Locusts were reported in September in Brakna west of Moudjeria, in Tagant near Tidjikja, in the Akoukar region near Aïoun El Atrous and north of Nema.
Limited breeding started in early September and is expected to continue in Brakna and Aouker Aïoun, and will almost certainly extend to Trarza, northern Assaba and the two Hodhs.

This grant is being used for managing distribution of 2,500 MT of wheat to 39,000 beneficiaries, and for the operation of 40 supplementary feeding centers benefitting 2000 malnourished children in the drought affected areas of the Brakna region, and in one district of the Assaba region.

Normally, the rainy season that runs from July to October is highly anticipated in this dry, arid country that frequently suffers from water shortages.
Two people died in the town of Boutilimit, 154 km east of the capital Nouakchott, and five members of a family, including three children, perished in the village of Ednesh, near the southern town of Aleg in the Brakna region.

A large number of turtle doves have been found dead over the past few days in southern Mauratania, triggering new fears of bird flu spread in Africa, the Mauratinia-based Horizons newspaper reported Thursday.
In the country's central south region of Brakna, authorities reported "massive deaths" of the birds around a pond close to the Senegal River.
Meanwhile, experts from the French Institute of Agricultural Research (CIRAD) have arrived in the West African state, where they have conducted nearly 500 preliminary tests on the dead birds.

ABIDJAN - Feb 25/02 - IRIN -- Mauritania is likely to experience a nationwide grain deficit of more than 160,000 metric tons (MT) this year, especially in the southwestern regions of Trarza, Brakna and Gorgol, which were hardest hit by winter rains in January, the Food Early Warning System (FEWS) reports.
"The situation in Trarza and Brakna regions and, to a lesser extent, in Gorgol, Assaba, and Tagant regions, has deteriorated as far as food supplies are concerned," FEWS said in its December - January update.
The untimely, heavy rains caused the death of livestock, including 32,346 goats and sheep in Trarza, 45,000 in Brakna and 6,000 in Gorgol.
