Frank Belknap Long - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
During his life, Long received the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement (at the 1978 World Fantasy Convention), the Bram Stoker Award for Lifetime Achievement (in 1987, from the Horror Writers of America), and the First Fandom Hall of Fame Award (1977).
Long was also part of the loosely associated "Lovecraft Circle" of fantasy writers (along with Robert Bloch, August Derleth, Robert E. Howard, Henry Kuttner, Clark Ashton Smith, and Donald Wandrei) who corresponded regularly with each other and influenced and critiqued each other's works.
Long's Hounds of Tindalos have also inspired a number of metal and electronic music artists, such as Epoch of Unlight, Edith Byron's Group, Beowulf, Fireaxe/Brian Voth, and Univers Zero, all of whom have recorded tracks based upon the story.

Article: Naming the Stars: The Awards of Science Fiction (part 1 of 2), by Greg Beatty
Each award is given to recognize a specific type of achievement in the field; each is also given in memory of a giant in science fiction.
The award used to include a thousand pounds sterling, but in 2001 the award went up to £2001 (to acknowledge the centrality of Clarke's 2001), and it will increase a pound a year to keep pace with the year.
As the list of awards and deaths indicates, these awards also recognize a sort of passing of the guard, a sense that the early founders are passing on and that their memories should be kept alive.

Bio: Abraham "Bram" Stoker was born near Dublin in 1847 where he spent his first seven years more often than not confined to his bed due to a mysterious and unexplained disorder.
With contrasting Transylvanian and English settings and a mixture of the erotic, the macabre, and the thrilling adventure so typical of later nineteenth century fiction, Stoker created a novel and a character from which he and his reputation would never escape.
Of the many admiring reviews Bram Stoker's Dracula received when it first appeared in 1897, the most astute praise came from the author's mother, who wrote her son: "It is splendid.
