  Donato Bramante
Other works of Bramante's first Roman period are the choir of Santa Maria del Popolo, the plan for the reconstruction of the Vatican, the extension of the Belvedere court, etc. The most majestic creation, not only of Bramante and of the High Renaissance, but in fact of Christian art, is the new St. Peter's.
Bramante's plans suffered many changes and encroachments under the various directors until Michaelangelo returned to the fundamental ideas of the brilliant creator, and by the completion of the dome substantially carried the work to a conclusion.
Bramante, on the contrary, was a man who enjoyed life in a happy and liberal way, and who knew how to live up to the dignity of his prominent position.

BRAMANTE, DONATO [Bramante, Donato], 1444-1514, Italian Renaissance architect and painter, b.
Bramante designed much of the Church of Santa Maria presso San Satiro in Milan; its famous choir, painted in perspective, gives an illusion of great depth, although it is extremely shallow.
Although St. Peter's was later remodeled into a longitudinal structure, Bramante is responsible for the essential proportions of the east end, and his design influenced the appearance of many smaller churches.

Donato Bramante, or Bramante Lazzari, Italian architect and painter, whose real name was Donato d'Augnolo, was born at Monte-Asdrualdo in Urbino, in July 1444.
So impatient was the pope and so eager was Bramante, that the foundations were not sufficiently well attended to; great part of it had, therefore, soon to be rebuilt, and the whole is now so much altered that it is hardly possible to decipher the original design.
Bramante's designs were complete, and he pushed on the work so fast that before his death he had erected the four great piers and their arches, and completed the cornice and the vaulting in of this portion.

Bramante was, by now, the leading architect in Rome, called in on almost every major building project.
Bramante produced the first of many projects for what was to be Christendom's premier church, symbolic of the pontiffs' majesty: a "Greek cross" structure of colossal size, formed by four equally long arms with four terminal apses, crowned by a central dome.
