Brancepeth Castle remained in the hands of the crown for a number of years until King James I gave it to Robert Carr, Earl Of Somerset.
The Russels of Brancepeth became one of four great coal owning families in the north called the `Grand Allies’ and William’s son Matthew became the richest commoner in England.
Brancepeth is said to acquire its name from being the Brawn’s Peth, an area frequented by a notorious BRAWN (or Wild boar) many centuries ago.

History of Tudhoe Village: Dissent and Rebellion in County Durham
All except the Brancepeth road are shown, somewhat schematically, on Thomas Jeffrey's map of Durham (1758).
Brancepeth lies across the River Wear from Tudhoe; there has never been a bridge, and the ford was not an easy one.
It was in Brancepeth parish, where the Salvins themselves were not so well known, but it lay on the other side of the River Wear from Brancepeth church, so that it was not much in the eye of the Brancepeth churchwardens.

Not far from the famous cathedral city of Durham is the pretty village of Brancepeth.
Some of the Brancepeth ravines — and they are not mere ditches — are occupied by thick woodland and some by streams.
A selection of the best holes at Brancepeth Castle would include the 4th, a very handsome par four, the 9th, a long short hole ‘of terrifying grandeur’ according to Bernanrd Darwin but where there are delightful glimpses of the castle, and the short par four 14th.

British Archaeology, no 41, February 1999: News   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
John Cosin was rector of Brancepeth from 1626 to 1640, and became Bishop of Durham after the Restoration of Charles II.
Cosin was a devotee of High Medieval style, and the furnishings at Brancepeth were marked by an unusual combination of Jacobean elements with 14th and 15th century pastiche.
This has been taken to suggest that Cosin planned to turn Brancepeth into his own mausoleum, although in the end he was buried at Bishop Auckland, according to freelance buildings archaeologist Peter Ryder who made an assessment of the church shortly before the fire.

Brandon and Byshottles originally one of the seven townships within the ancient Parish of Brancepeth, grew from a sparcely populated agricultural area into a populous mining district after the establishment of collieries and later coke and fireclay works.
The Brancepeth lands were then broken up in a series of sales to London merchants and financiers who in turn resold to local buyers at high profits.
In 1801, the Brandon and Byshottles population was 522; in 1811, 435; in 1851; 525 in 1881; then rose to 10,850; and in 1891, was 14,240.

Brawn of Brancepeth   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Some people say the village of Brancepeth was named after the great wild boar that lived in the nearby woods many years ago, `Brawn's path,' though some say it simply means `the path to Brandon,' which is a neighbouring village.
The men of Brancepeth had tried all the conventional methods of ridding themselves of the boar, but their arrows barely scratched its skin and the only man who had been brave enough to attack it with a sword had been so badly mauled that no one else was prepared to attempt a similar effort.
It was a wily creature, travelling at great speed through the forests and long grass on its way to and from different feeding grounds.
