Alternative medicine is a broad term for any method that seeks to prevent or heal disease, or care for the body, through techniques that may not be sanctioned or regulated by a locality, including state-sanctioned professional organizations such as accredited medical schools, foundations or institutes, or peer-reviewed journals.
Most forms of alternative medicine are rejected as invalid by scientists because they have not been shown to work through randomized controlled trials, double-blind experimental validation of their techniques, nor has the efficacy of their treatment been verified.
Some proponents of alternative medicine argue that the lack of evaluation of such practices prior to the 1990s means that it cannot be truly claimed that conventional medicine practitioners relied upon the scientific method for their results.

A few years ago, there was a case of an alternative healer (an Iatrosophist, whatever that may be) who treated a cancer patient by letting him play the piano and eat grass (this is not a joke).
I would not condemn all alternative medicine as useless and harmful.
