Persis Drell sent me this message concerning D* branching ratios: I would like to alert you to an important error in the 1994 Particle Data Book which may impact your analysis.
However, PDG appear to have taken our results on the D* branching fractions and added the constraint that the branching fractions must sum to 1 to get values for the individual branching fractions with smaller errors than are quoted in our paper.
This is all very clever except that we already applied this constraint in our paper on the D* branching fractions so their proceedure effectively applies this constraint twice and artificially lowers the errors!
