  Crustacean from Rhynie: Lepidocaris rhyniensis
This very small crustacean (up to 3 mm) is the most common and best-known animal from the Rhynie chert.
It belongs to an extinct order of the branchiopod crustaceans, the Lipostraca, and it is the oldest known species in this group.
It is also one of the earliest known freshwater crustaceans.

Branchiopoda - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Branchiopods in general are equipped with a ventral food groove, useful for suspension and filter feeding.
The water current in the ventral food groove, used for breathing and feeding in most species, are producing by a battery of unspecialised legs.
The small branchiopods, mostly represented by water fleas, have succeeded in becoming zooplankton in such a degree that waters filled with fish and other threats are no longer a problem.

 The Rhynie Chert Crustaceans
Above: Examples of extant branchiopod crustaceans (not shown to scale): A: a notostracan or 'tadpole shrimp'; B: a cladoceran or 'water flea'; C: an anostracan or 'fairy shrimp'; D: a conchostracan or 'clam shrimp' (the lower image showing the animal with the left valve or 'shell' removed) (after McLaughlin 1980).
Branchiopods ('gill-feet'), sometimes called phyllopods ('leaf-feet'), are generally very small crustaceans characterised by having a variable number of delicate foliaceous and lobed, relatively uniform trunk or body limbs; some types possess a single dorsal cephalothoracic shield, or a bivalve shell (see inset above).
The Rhynie branchiopods are particularly important since not only do they appear to represent a lineage from the 'early crustacean design' but they also give an insight into the timing of the adaptation of these crustaceans to continental and freshwater habitats.

Potholes and vernal pools as potential indicator systems
Climatic variability occurs at a number of temporal scales, and while branchiopods are adapted to a particular range of climatic conditions at an evolutionary scale, there is intra- and interannual variation in conditions (at an ecological scale) that can also affect long term survival of a branchiopod population in a pool.
Branchiopods are adapted to the inherent variability of climatic patterns, but shifts that are more rapid or beyond the range of "normal" variation could adversely affect the ability of a species to maintain populations in ephemeral pools.
Branchiopods hatched, but few pools lasted long enough for the shrimp to complete their life cycles and replenish the sediment cyst bank.

Studies on Large Branchiopod Biology and Conservation by Marie A. Simovich [ISBN: 0792349660] - Find Cheap Textbook ...
This volume is a collection of papers concerning the biology of large branchiopod crustaceans: Anostraca, Conchostraca, and Notostraca.
Researchers from around the world presented papers on a variety of topics related to conservation of large branchiopods, with contributions ranging from alpha-taxonomy and zoogeography to community structure and studies of ecology and evolution.
Although we have made important strides in understanding the biology of large branchiopods, we have, with few notable exceptions, made little progress in assuring the conservation of their diversity.

Expedition Notes (Mongolia 2002 NHMLAC)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Our primary goal was to collect branchiopod crustaceans from ephemeral habitats for molecular and morphological systematics research.
Branchiopods are a group of invertebrate animals within the larger group Crustacea.
Most branchiopods live in fresh water (though there are marine and brackish species), and often have an encysting stage that enables them to persist in small temporary bodies of water.

 The Rhynie Chert Crustaceans
Above: Cluster of at least five branchiopod larvae or nauplii in a thin section of Windyfield chert (scale bar = 200µm).
Above: A single branchiopod larva or nauplius viewed from the anterior aspect (anterior-most portion of the head, first antennae and right (left as viewed) second antenna truncated by the thin section).
Therefore these new crustacean remains represent the earliest ontogenetic stages or instars of a branchiopod found to date in either the Windyfield or Rhynie cherts.

The very broad distribution of large branchiopods (down to the species level) necessitates a global view of these critters, and this database is designed with this in mind.

The database so far includes species identifications, sex ratios, and if the information was taken from the literature, the reference to that published work.

Because natural branchiopod habitat is sparse on Site 300, it is not surprising that listed branchiopods were not observed during this 2001-2002 wet season survey.
Most of the habitat available to branchiopods on the site is puddles that form in roadbeds and dry quickly.
In short, there is little habitat available on the site for branchiopods and most of the habitat present is generally too short-lived to support the branchiopod species that do occur at Site 300.
