 Robert Robinson (scientist) Summary
Robinson is best known for his study and synthesis of several groups of organic chemicals which are composed of two or more ring structures--alkaloids (including morphine and strychnine), the female sex hormones and other steroids, and plant pigments called anthocyanins.
Robinson's most important work, in 1925, was determining the complete structure of morphine.
Robinson was also one of several scientists to independently determine the structure of the steroid cholesterol.

Locus Online: Sample reviews from Gary K. Wolfe's Soundings
He's wrong, of course, and in a daring structural trick Robinson kills him off shortly after this speech, leaving us to backtrack to discover how what started out as an unstable mix of utopianism and opportunism leads to the assassination which is one of the novel's two climaxes.
Robinson's main challenge, then, is keeping his scientific and utopian narratives from going off by themselves, and he handles it masterfully by focusing on character, and to a lesser extent on the stunningly realized setting.
Robinson may have built his emerging Martian social order on extensions of current geopolitics, but his ending suggests this may have been necessary to provide a kind of intellectual archaeology for his next two volumes.

 Sir Robert Robinson - Biography
Sir Robert Robinson was born at Rufford, near Chesterfield, Derbyshire on September 13th, 1886, the son of William Bradbury Robinson, a surgical dressing manufacturer who invented his own machines for the production of lint, bandages, etc., and the cardboard boxes for packaging them.
Robinson's extensive researches in organic chemistry have dealt not only with the structure and synthesis of many organic bodies, but also with the electrochemical mechanism of organic reactions.
His interest in the chemical constitution of plant dyestuffs (anthocyanins) soon extended to another group of vegetable bodies, the alkaloids, where the whole series of his researches are remarkable for their brilliant syntheses.

Frank M. Robinson's Official Web Site
In his sleek tale, Robinson brings these two protagonists progressively closer and closer together, and while he doesn't always maintain the high-stakes tension of the book's opening chapters, he's a crackerjack writer with a great ear, and he keeps the pages turning by giving his characters psychological depth.
Thus, Dennis is searching for clues to his past while pining for his adoptive sister, not to mention running for his life, and Robert has so confused his greed with his need, he's convinced this is his last chance.
Bestselling author Frank M. Robinson tells the story-behind-the-story, from Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, published in the 1800s, through the fantastic visions of Arthur C. Clarke, Ray Bradbury, Robert Heinlein, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, and a host of others who made science fiction not only their profession but their life.
