The six Brandenburg concertos (BWV 1046–1051) by Johann Sebastian Bach are a collection of instrumental works presented by Bach to the Margrave of Brandenburg in 1721, but probably composed earlier.
An excerpt of the Second Concerto was placed upon the Voyager Golden Record on the Voyager spacecraft, and the Third Concerto was used as the original theme of the BBC programme "The Antiques Roadshow".

It seems almost certain that Bach, considered a great keyboard (A musician who is a consummate master of technique and artistry) virtuoso in his day, was the keyboard soloist at the premiere.
Generally, mainstream symphony orchestras play them less often than in the past, and the works are now more often the province of (additional info and facts about authentic performance) authentic performance ensembles.

What we call the Brandenburg Concerti were probably written for the musicians at Cothen well before the graced the ears of the Margrave of Brandenburg.
In many ways, the Brandenburgs are very similar in practice to modern small jazz ensembles with the keyboardist filling in or "comping" along with the rest of the band.
One of the featured recordings was one of the Brandenburg Concerti, prompting a commentator to wryly observe that was dirty pool--it would be giving aliens an unrealistically good first impression of human culture.

The nickname "Brandenburg" itself was only applied much later in the nineteenth century when the manuscript was rediscovered in the Brandenburg archives.
Among the Brandenburgs, this concerto can be said to be the lightest and wittiest, bringing to one's mind the urbane, wordly court of the Parisian salon.

Brandenburg Concerto No.3, BWV 1048, surely one of the pinacles of Baroque string ensemble writing, is my favourite of the six.
With its scoring for two violas, two violas da gamba, cello, violone and harpsichord, the result is a unique work virtually booming with the sonorous choir of these lower-end instruments.

The Brandenburg Concerti are six pieces of music written by Johann Sebastian Bach.
The Brandenburg Concerti were written as a gift for Margrave Christian Ludwig of Brandenburg.
Although the Brandenburg Concerti were presented to the Margrave in 1721 and commissioned in 1719, it is quite likely that Bach had been working on them for a few years beforehand.

The opening of Sunday’s concert (Brandenburg Concerto No. 3) immediately recalled a stereotypical “NY style” of string playing which suggests playing this type of music in the upper half of the bow and with the bow almost always on the string.
A few other issues were also puzzling, such as the unusual use of both piano and harpsichord in Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, the elasticity of the tempo in the first movement of the E Major Concerto (BWV 1053), and the literal interpretation of the upbeat in the Finale of Brandenburg Concerto No. 5.
Even phlegm-plagued coughers were miraculously cured; silently spellbound, all listened to the soloist as he cast his long lines and phrases in the perfect Largo of the Concerto in F Minor (BWV 1056).

During his service at Köthen, he began writing original concerti, and many of these are concerti grossi, featuring a small group of soloists, known as the concertino, rather than a single instrument.
Understandably, Bach’s concerti show influences from Vivaldi’s works, the most obvious being their three-movement form.Additionally, outer movements are structured as a concertato dialogue between the ripieno (the whole orchestra) and the soloist(s).
The Brandenburg Concerti, dedicated to the Margrave of Brandenburg on 24 March 1721, lay apparently unplayed in the Margrave of Brandenburg’s library until well after his death.

Bach's autograph of the six Brandenburg Concerti is dated March 24, 1721, and is described by Bach as the result of a "command" from Christian Ludwig, the Margrave of Brandenburg, whom Bach had bet two years earlier.
However, it's likely that Bach wrote the concerti with an orchestra like the one he was directing at Cõthen under Prince Leopold and not the slim forces at Brandenburg.

The form was probably developed by Alessandro Stradella around 1680, who seems to have written the first music in which a "concertino" and "ripieno" are juxtaposed in the characteristic way, though he did not use the term "concerto grosso".
Composers such as Francesco Geminiani and Giuseppe Torelli wrote concerti in the style of Corelli, and he also had a large influence on Antonio Vivaldi.
Several of the Brandenburg Concerti of Johann Sebastian Bach also loosely follow the concerto grosso form, notably the 2nd Concerto, which has a concertino of recorder, piccolo trumpet, oboe, and solo violin.

The Brandenburg Concertos seem to be Bach's most popular works by far, and there are so many recordings of them out there--on period instruments and "modern," and at all price ranges.
The OAE's instrumental playing is very skillful indeed, with particularly nice work from the horns in the third movement of the First Concerto, and from trumpeter Mark Bennett in the Second; and the tempos are moderately quick (which means that they would have been considered rather fast before 1980 or so), but without being breathless.
The slow movements sing sweetly--the viola playing of Monica Huggett and Pavlo Besnosiuk in the slow movement of the Sixth Concerto is especially lovely--and the quick outer movements have an infectiously bouncy pulse.

Although this wasn't a completely "authentic" performance (since the ensemble had a mixture of traditional and period instruments at its disposal), it was the nearest thing to a 17/18th century sound anyone had managed to record to date.
Until then, most performances of the Brandenburgs were done with large orchestras of Romantic period proportions, and original performance practice had largely been lost.

The Brandenburg Concerti have been recorded many, many times, and been recorded well most of those times.
These concerti are chamber music; fortunately we are long past the time when the full string sections of famous orchestras would try to play them.
Another drawback to this recording is the engineer’s allowing no more than a fraction of a second between concerti; you may want to hit pause right at the final chord to avoid a sense of collision.

Deutsche Gramophon is generally known for superior sound, but this 1982 piece of digital engineering (Brandenburg Concertos) surpasses anything I have ever heard even from this label: Purity, clarity, spaciousness and presence are uniquely combined to provide a listening experience which could hardly be topped.
The only slight question mark could perhaps be put behind the Sixth Brandenburg Concerto, which in its Adagio slow movement seems to lack a little fire.
Generally, Pinnock has chosen tempi that are moderate, and although musicologists and interpreters since this recording (Goebel; Rampe) have argued cogently for faster rhythms, their efforts sound decidedly contrived in comparison with Pinnock's easy, flowing version which caresses the ear without betraying any of Bach's depth or humour.

The first movement is somewhat unusual in that none of the actual Brandenburg Concerti begin in minor—this, no doubt an influence of either another movement in the concerti or a movement of the orchestral suites.
The second movement resembles many Bach keyboard concerti second movements, though none so much as the second movement of the F-minor concerto and the Air from the third orchestral suite, though again the differences are significant.
