Miskin Manor Hotel (Where To Stay)
The Manor then passed on to Sir Rhys Williams whose wife, Juliet, was the daughter of the novelist Elinor Glyn.
Under the ownership of Sir Rhys the Manor saw a great deal of society and even had the honour of entertaining the Prince of Wales (later to become Edward VIII) on one of his trips to Wales in the 1920's accompanied by Lloyd George.
On Sir Rhys' death the Manor passed to Sir Brandon Rhys Williams from whom the house was purchased in August 1985.

Davis is so terribly noble and plays the martyr with such conviction that you are only subconsciously aware of the sexual undercurrent between the student and teacher; her devotion to Evans is at once gently heartfelt and and poignantly bitter.
Rhys Williams has a few amusing moments, but one worries about his apparent identity complex-he can't seem to make up his mind whether he is Welsh or Irish, so he throws in a little of both just to be sure.

House of Commons Hansard Debates for 24 Apr 1989
I was paying tribute to the memory of Sir Brandon Rhys Williams, whose absence from these debates is much regretted by Opposition and Conservative Members, not simply by Conservative Members.
There would be no more fitting tribute to the memory of the late Sir Brandon Rhys Williams than for the House to pass new clause 1 or new clause 2.
Sir Brandon was indefatigable in his defence of child benefit and in his campaigns to secure regular and honest upratings of that benefit.

Time to close a poverty trap
It was 'The Social Contract' by Sir Brandon Rhys Williams, Bt that first introduced me to the idea of integrating taxation and benefits; I gave support to it in my pamphlet 'No Mean City' (Monday Club, 1969).
Sir Brandon put the case for Family Allowances in a speech to the House of Commons on 2 November 1987; I reprinted it in Prag No. 46, Easter 1989.
The difficulty with these ideas, at least when considered in the context of supplying people with an incentive to come off the dole (out of the 'unemployment trap'), was that they were far too expensive; one swapped high marginal tax rates on all for a reduction of very high on a few.

House of Commons Hansard Debates for 25 Oct 1989
At that time, Sir Brandon was making one of his numerous attempts to get such provisions enacted in company law.
Sir Brandon's last act before his death was to introduce a Bill to this effect, which was passed unopposed on its Third Reading in the House, but which was regrettably blocked in another place by a hysterical campaign conducted by the Confederation of British Industry.
At the time, I believed that that campaign was grossly over the top in its reaction to the threat to companies' independence and powers to carry out their proper duties by virtue of having the independent directors proposed by Sir Brandon.

It seems unlikely that such an attractive site was altogether unoccupied before the present manor house was built, particularly as there is asource of fresh water on the north side which still could be pumped up from a well until quite recent times.
The long avenue of horse chestnuts was planted in 1864, but at the time when young Rhys and his brothers were first knocking a cricket ball about in the field alongside, there would have been little to see ofthem.
However, the old oak tree which still stands at the southern edge of the cricket field had already grown to the same appearance as it is now, and it can be seen quite clearly in the earliest photographs of the ground.
