		Meriadoc Brandybuck was a sensible Hobbit whose concern for his cousin Frodo Baggins led him to mastermind the "conspiracy" that ensured that Frodo embarked on his quest with his friends at his side.
		Merry was the only son and heir of the Master of Buckland, Saradoc Brandybuck, who was known as "Scattergold." The Brandybucks were a wealthy and respected family who lived in Buckland across the Brandywine River, though some folk in the Shire thought them rather queer.

		We get the feeling though the the families Brandybuck and Took were more loyal than that, as witness the willingness with which each "hobbitry at arms" come to the call when Merry and Pippin ride to raise the alarm.
		Although Tolkien was writing this thing for years, it was clear he wasn't sure where he was headed with some of the characters or what their purpose was since they don't do anything interesting.
		I am thinking idly that both Diamond of Long Cleeve and Estella Bolger Brandybuck would have to be dead when Eomer sends his last message to the HOldwine of the Mark.
