P-branes or branes are terms from quantum superstring theory used to refer to membrane-like structures of one to eleven dimensions that arise in equations of this heavily mathematical theory.
Branes are objects in M-theory and its offshoot, brane cosmology.
In brane cosmology, the term "brane" is used to refer to objects similar to our four-dimensional universe, which move in a higher-dimensional "bulk".

Brane cosmology -   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Brane cosmology is a protoscience motivated by, but not rigorously derived from, superstring theory and M-theory.
In the brane picture, the other three forces (electromagnetism and the weak and strong nuclear forces) are localised on the brane, but gravity has no such constraint and so much of its attractive power "leaks" into the bulk.
The Randall-Sundrum, pre-big bang, ekpyrotic and cyclic scenarios are particular models of brane cosmology which have attracted a considerable amount of attention.

Physical cosmology, as a branch of astrophysics, is the study of the large-scale structure of the universe and is concerned with fundamental questions about its formation and evolution.
Physical cosmology, roughly speaking, deals with the very largest objects in the universe (galaxies, clusters and superclusters), the very earliest distinct objects to form (quasars) and the very early universe, when it was nearly homogeneous (hot big bang, cosmic inflation and the cosmic microwave background radiation).
Cosmology is unusual in physics for drawing heavily on the work of particle physicists' experiments, and research into phenomenology and even string theory; from astrophysicists; from general relativity research; and from plasma physics.

 Edge: THEORIES OF THE BRANE
Branes allow for an entirely new set of possibilities in the physics of extra dimensions, because particles confined to the brane would look more or less as they would in a three-plus-one-dimension world; they never venture beyond it.
When the energy in space is correlated with the energy on the brane so that a large flat three-dimensional brane sits in the higher-dimensional space, the graviton (the particle communicating the gravitational force) is highly attracted to the brane.
The aforementioned second brane appeared to serve two purposes: It explained the hierarchy problem because of the small probability for the graviton to be there, and it was also responsible for bounding the extra dimension so that at long distances (bigger than the dimension's size) only three dimensions are seen.

Pre-big-bang cosmology was an attempt to reconcile inflationary cosmology with superstring theory.
With the recent advent of brane world cosmology, which was developed to solve the hierarchy problem and where the Universe is considered to be a giant D-brane, we now have to reconcile brane worlds with pre-big-bang cosmology.
The rate of brane creation due to these quantum effects may be so fast as to balance the dilution of the brane density due to the expansion.

Brane lensing in the reverse direction can generate a similar appearance of odd definitions of locality where the reverse would hold true(1).
Brane Cosmology deals with the same, but also goes a bit further in an attempt to explain not only what is outside of our Universe in what we termed hyperspace, but, also, where the Strings and membranes themselves come from.
However, the constancy of the speed of light does have implications for Cosmology since certain prime aspects of our interpretation of observations are based upon the assumption that C is constant and that we can observationally compare frames.

Many physicists are studying branes in the hope of linking gravity and the other fundamental forces of nature to the elementary particles that communicate these forces.
Moreover, Linde claims that the branes in the ekpyrotic model are not truly uniform in structure and therefore can't account for the large-scale uniformity of the universe.
Because the attractive force between branes is so small, they move at a snail's pace, and it could take an extraordinarily long time for a collision to occur, he says.
