Dams constructed throughout California’s central valley and foothill areas in the mid-1900s drastically reduced the amount of sediment carried into the Delta.
Consequently, the only emergent landforms still subject to river flow, tidal action and other natural processes in the Delta are the levee/channel interfaces, and narrow, remnant in-channel islands (ICIs) that intermittently thread their way through the rivers and sloughs.
To compensate, these sediment deprived rivers are "hungry" for sediment they used to carry and they are devouring the ecologically critical in-channel islands at a pace that far exceeds replenishment.
