AMZ December, 1999 - Brant Bjork
Formerly of Kyuss and Fu Manchu fame, drummer "Brant Bjork" revels in the spotlight on his latest venture into solo terrain with "Jalamanta." Could it be he's trading in the desert sands for sandy beaches?
On his new release, Bjork is found to still retain that feel of the desert, but rarely hides the fact that he's given to leisure travel as the mood suits him.
Bjork's new music features a stripped-down and very skin and bone recording, reigning in plenty of '70s stimuli, as well as encroaching on a more soulful design that many have yet to realize, their heads evidently still clouded from the incessant blare of the bass.

Bjork's former Kyuss bandmate Josh Homme has achieved great crossover success with his group Queens of the Stone Age, with the sounds on this album, the man who sat behind him could go the same way.

 Brant Bjork Album Reviews
Brant Bjork and the Operators certainly has its merits (a great, warm sound, strong playing, diversity, a cover that has to be a pun on Cheech and Chong’s Wedding Album, considering the similarity in dress code/attitude), but the songs aren’t always the beneficiaries, and some were probably more fun to make than to listen to.
Gone are the hesitant pop pretensions of Brant Bjork and the Operators and so is most of the noodling that some of his earlier songs contained.
You won't hear a negative word about Bjork coming out of my mouth - he was a sweet guy when I spoke to him earlier this year and delivered one of the best gigs I've seen the past years - but I really feel he could've been better this time around.
