It was on Branxton Hill, immediately south of the village, that the battle of Flodden (q.v.) was fought between the English and the Scots on the gth of September 1513.
During the fight the Scots centre pushed as far as Branxton church, but " the King's Stone," which lies N.W. of the church and is popularly supposed to mark the spot where James IV.
Branxton church, dedicated to St Paul, was rebuilt in 1849 in Norman style.

Branxton is one of a string of small townships strung out between Singleton and Maitland and has been here since European Settlement in the 1840’s.
What was originally Black Creek became Branxton in 1848 when local landowners subdivided their acres and developed a small village on the edge of a flood plain.
Branxton too has it’s share of historical buildings and the surrounding countryside holds some pleasant surprises when it comes to accommodation and wineries.

Branxton Village Hall, which is currently undergoing refurbishment, is central to the project as it will become a centre for a mobile exhibition about the battle and display collections of Flodden artefacts.
Branxton parish council recently undertook a Parish Plan, and much of the work going on in the village, including this project, has come out of this completed document.

The Catholic Bishop of Maitland-Newcastle in New South Wales says he will appoint a new parish priest to the Branxton parish as soon as possible, after its former priest was convicted of child sex offences this week.
Father James Fletcher, 63, was found guilty of nine charges relating to the repeated sexual assault of a teenage boy between 1989 and 1991.
"I've been conscious of the fact that Branxton has been without the parish priest now for quite a long time - they've felt a bit rudderless during that intervening time, so it would be my plan to appoint a new priest as quickly as possible," he said.

One of the bloodiest battles in Scotland's history was the Battle of Flodden, a disastrous confrontation which took place on September 9, 1513, on the River Till, near Branxton, Northumberland.
When it was over, an estimated five to ten thousand Scots were dead including 12 Earls, 15 Lords, many Clan Chiefs, some abbots, an archbishop and James IV, the King of Scotland himself.
Thus in the summer of 1513, James IV honoured his commitment to King Louis XII to divert English troops from France where they were needed to fight for Henry.
