During the first half of the seventeenth century Brasenose suffered recurring financial problems and by the 1640s the College was very poor and deeply in debt, owing £1,400 to tradesmen.
The eighteenth century was the period of the drunken Oxford undergraduate and the prosperous Brasenose fellow.
Brasenose was an early leader in Oxford sport and in the nineteenth century it acquired a great sporting reputation, rowing head of the river for many years and at one stage providing no fewer than eight members of the University cricket team.

Students and college authorities at Brasenose College, founded in 1509, were surprised to discover that the distinguished institution had been put up for auction on the online trading website this week.
Brasenose was described on eBay as “surplus to requirements” and “going cheap” in the ‘used collectibles' section of the website.
Brasenose bursar John Knowland said: “This sort of light-hearted activity is a tribute to the ingenuity of Oxford students and to their ability to give us all a bit of fun.” However, university proctors failed to see the funny side of what would have been one of eBay's largest ever transactions.

It was there related to me that there was in fact deer at Brasenose at one time but that one of the dons had a pet unicorn.
During this specific don’s stay here at Brasenose the unicorn became frustrated that he was the only unicorn in the college and felt quite lonely.

I also have a picture postcard of the Dining Hall at Brasenose, which I bought at an Australian Stamp Day and it is somewhat different to the Hall at my old school - but that had only 50 years of history not 500.

Since I read PPE (Politics, Philosophy and Economics) at Brasenose College, let me relate that in my first year I occupied one of the two oldest rooms in the College, above the kitchen, apparently dating from the 14th century.
The room was supposed to be haunted, though the only "spirits" I experienced were of the banal, non-metaphysical sort that undergraduates are apt to imbibe to excess.
He was made CBE in 1975 for his diligent work for charities in the East End of London and is considered fully 'rehabilitated' by the people who care about such matters.
