That's the essence of Brassed Off, a bittersweet gem released in 1996, a year before its more popular (and Oscar-nominated) counterpart.
Unconcerned with this all is Danny (a brilliant Pete Postlethwaite), the leader of the mine's brass band group, so intent on winning the national championships that he doesn't see at first the turmoil as the members of his band face unemployment--including his own son.
And if you think you don't enjoy brass band music, "Brassed Off" will go a long way towards changing your mind--this is *not* oompah-pah-pah music of your high-school marching band.

Brassed Off, written and directed by Mark Herman, takes a look at the plight of the British coal miner - a dying breed.
Brassed Off is a traditional feel-good motion picture with an element of social commentary thrown in for good measure.
Despite this, or perhaps partially because of it, Brassed Off successfully presents its theme without ever becoming overbearing, it's heart is in the right place, it has a great soundtrack, and it keeps the viewer entertained.

 Salon | "Brassed Off"
"Brassed off" also means dejected, fed up, as we learn in the glossary of terms we're given at the opening of the movie.
The problem is that "Brassed Off" continues to spell out its message -- "It's people who matter" -- in billboard proportions long after that glossary's gone, even as writer and director Mark Herman doodles precious little curlicues of humanity in the movie's corners.
His hope is to lead them to victory in a national brass band competition, and he works them mercilessly, blind to the fact that they're preoccupied by the impending closure of their mine (a move they still hope to be able to vote down).

However Mark Herman's Brassed Off successfully blends the personal and the political, and though the setting is dour, the result is an angry yet frequently uplifting tale of community empowerment featuring a committed British cast.
Set in the northern town of Grimley in 1992, the story deals with the imminent closure of the town's coal mine - the area's only significant source of employment.
Among the protestors are cocky worker Andy (McGregor) and struggling family man Phil (Tompkinson).

 Brassed Off (1996)
The basic theme of Brassed Off is both extremely worthy and rarely touched upon by contemporary cinema.
By shifting the emphasis to something which is dependent upon the colliery yet fundamentally separate, Brassed Off manages to inject both humour and a dash of real-life into the otherwise dour proceedings.
So, Brassed Off is a qualified success which, at the very least, doesn't get all nostalgic for some far-off "golden age" that never existed.

Day One at the Berlin International Film Festival
"Brassed Off," the British film about a brass band in a Yorkshire coal mining town, has been the hit of the festival so far garnering a resounding round of applause after its screening last night as well as kudos from critics.
Even fest director Moritz De Hadeln was glimpsed slipping into the packed midnight press conference for "Brassed Off." Director Mark Herman, fresh from an enthusiastic reception in Sundance, was not surprised at his success in Berlin having already had the chance to gauge audience reaction outside his native Britain.
Herman said he felt it was the sense of community and people coming together in a crisis as well as the wonderful music that appealed to people even though they had no knowledge of the British political situation in the mid-1980's the backdrop against which the film is set.

Brassed Off incorporates two major elements of early 1990s Yorkshire: that brass bands were a popular diversion for the working class; and that workers were laid off in record numbers as the Thatcher government shut down more and more mines.
Brass band music isn't especially subtle -- and neither is Brassed Off.
Under Herman's direction, Brassed Off cleverly dresses its social and political concerns in the guise of a musical adventure that's in the against-all-odds Rocky mold.

Brassed Off deals with the English version of the scenario; a town in which most everyone works at the same job -- mining coal -- and the hobbies seem to be drinking, playing pool, or participating in a brass band.
Once upon a time, the Grimley Colliery Brass Band was nationally famous in competition; Danny, as leader, hopes to take it back to that zenith.

An older one is arsed off, from arse off, a low slang term from the later part of the nineteenth century that meant “to leave quickly”.
Brassed off could come from somebody having had a telling off from a superior officer, since senior officers were commonly called “the brass”, and very senior ones “the top brass”, in reference to the amount of gilt on their uniforms.
So to be brassed off could just mean that you have been doing some piece of mindless scut work and are thoroughly disgruntled as a result.
