Bratmobile made raw, political, sexy, poppy, personal, witty, pretty music from 1991 until they disbanded in 1994.
Bratmobile was and is one the most important and exciting underground female punk bands, and music fans are eagerly awaiting the return of Bmob 2000.
During the "Riot Girl Summer" of 1991 Bratmobile along with Bikini Kill and Heavens To Betsy became something of overnight media sensations with everyone in the mainstream press trying to figure out what these girls were so angry about.

At that time, Erin and I were doing Cold Cold Hearts and then we started Bratmobile again, and a lot of people are weird about the minimalism, but I think that’s cool and I just want to be a stripped–down punk rock band.
Bratmobile tends to get lumped in with third wave musically, whereas Sleater–Kinney are held at the forefront of the fourth wave.
Well, yeah, in a way it’s weird because I think that the first wave of Bratmobile was influential to a lot of the bands who are so popular now, but Corin, who’s in Sleater–Kinney, was also part of the whole Riot Grrrl thing; so was Kathleen, who’s in Le Tigre.

This is Olympia, Washington's Bratmobile, three women who alternately hype me up, turn me on and scare the hell out of me. See, all good punk rock should do that, but it's easier to define when women are playin' it.
Bratmobile have been at it since 1991, with a four year break just because.
Bratmobile's expressed it before, as have their closest genre-mates, Bikini kill and Lunachicks, but when it's done by the experts it never grows old, and that's certainly the case here.

A large portion of the crowd was apparently there especially for Bratmobile -- at least if the volume of catcalls and screams can be used as an accurate indicator.

Bratmobile's second 12", and their last release for close to six years, 1994's The Real Janelle is a big step up from the chaotic Pottymouth, both in musical skill and clarity of thought.
The low-key, quietly tense "Yeah, Huh?" is almost downright pretty in comparison to a full-force punk-rocker like "Die," but even the latter song is more controlled and direct than Bratmobile's earliest releases.

This was the only show I got to see on my 8 day trip to London in February of '02.
All the comparisons to The East Village perhaps apply only in the daytime, 'cuz St. mark's is still hopping at all times of the evening.
This was my first time seeing Bratmobile, but the crowd was just about what I would imagine would attend their shows, even in the UK; Riot Grrl knows no international boundaries.
