H all of Fame jockey Braulio Baeza, the assistant clerk of scales for the New York Racing Association, is one of only three jockeys in the history of the Travers Stakes to win the “Mid-Summer Derby” four times.
Baeza took a few moments to reflect back on those magnificent days of glory as Saturday’s 133rd running of the Grade 1, $1 million race for three-year-olds at a mile and a quarter [ESPN, 5 p.m.
Baeza was the only jockey to ever get a leg up on Wajima during his illustrious career that yielded nine wins and five seconds from 16 starts.

Baeza emigrated from Panama in 1960 at age 20 and rose to the top of American racing while riding in New York in an era when many of the best jockeys in the world rode on that circuit.
Baeza kept his eyes open, winning more than 3,200 races in North America, Panama, and Europe while partnering with such luminaries as 1966 Horse of the Year Buckpasser, ‘67 Horse of the Year Damascus, multiple champion Susan’s Girl, and ‘69 Horse of the Year Arts and Letters.
Baeza’s passion for horses is apparent when he discusses those he has been associated with, and it is as deep as the respect he still feels for the sport, although his serious approach to his profession was never more evident than when he was astride a Thoroughbred.

In Summer of 1976, at the height of the Saratoga meet, Braulio woke one morning to discover that after having jogged in his plastic suit and reduced the night before, he still had 8 pounds to lose before the start of the race day.
The charges against Baeza are, of course, just allegations at this point, but one can perhaps start to see a picture of a man who went through hell to maintain his riding weight and who just may have had sympathy for his younger colleagues going through the same struggle.
While the indictment includes allegations that the riders gave tips to the clerks, it doesn’t seem as if this was a scheme which would make Baeza rich.
