Braniewo Prussian: Brauseburgue,(German: Braunsberg) is a city in northeastern Poland, in Warmia-Mazury voivodship, with a population of 17,800 (2000).
In 1243 the city was given by the Order, together with the surrounding region of Warmia, to the newly created bishop of Warmia, who build his cathedral in the city and made it his chief residence.
The city was settled by newcomers from Lübeck and in 1284 given a new city charter, again based on the city charter of Lübeck.

On Weierstrass's recommendation Killing was appointed to a chair of mathematics at the Lyceum Hosianum in Braunsberg in 1882.
Killing spent ten years in Braunsberg, isolated mathematically, but during this period he produced some of the most original mathematics ever produced.

Born at Querfurt, Germany, in 974; died at Braunsberg, Germany, on February 14, 1009; the Roman Martyrology also shows his feast as Bruno on October 15.
He was appointed missionary archbishop, preached to the Magyars with considerable success, and then went to Kiev to preach to the Pechenegs.
He eventually worked to evangelize the Prussians, and on February 14, he and 18 companions were massacred on the Russian border near Braunsberg, Poland.

In Austria, flying was prohibited until 1928, due to the peace terms after World War I. In the 1930s, aerial archaeological photographs were made at the "Braunsberg" and in the nearby area of Carnuntum, Lower Austria.
