Braunvieh cattle are successfully used in crossbreeding programmes in 49 countries.
The first Braunvieh bulls were imported to South Africa in 1907 as part of a crossbreeding project launched by the department of Agriculture to breed suitable animals for the high-lying, cold areas of the country.
The Braunvieh Society of South Africa was founded on 2 April 1925 with the mission of promoting and maintaining the purity of the breed.
