"It's like cancelling John Peel": R.I.P. Brave New Waves, 1984-2007. | MetaFilter
Buried in code within a CBC press release regarding the revamp of CBC Radio is the death of the late-night radio show called Brave New Waves.
The irony is the mothership is targeting a younger demographic with their changes, but shoving the anemic new CBCR3 into a Sirius-only backwater and cancelling Brave New Waves makes it clear the CBC doesn't give two shits about reaching that demographic at all.
There was nothing like BNW for going to sleep by, you'd be lulled nearly to sleep by some lull in a 10 minute long instreumtal sound painting only to be woken up violently when the song switched to loud chaotic noise.

BNW has taught me more about music and enriched and expanded my musical landscape more than any other program (on CBC or anywhere else for that matter), so much so that it even inspired me to become a volunteer radio programmer on CJSW in Calgary.
As a 23-year-old institution I’m sure that the BNW team headed by Schmidt amassed a wealth of contacts, experience, credibility and a reputation for excellence within the worldwide underground music community that will now be lost.
In the shadow of Schmidt’s BNW the dreck of the current 12-1am fill-in is painful to listen to and should not be called Brave New Waves.

In an industry absolutely drowning in empty hyperbole, the Wave House is a shockingly ambitious, eight-figure project that is really, truly going to open the palace gates on June 16, and let in all those surfers, skaters, snowboarders and other extreme athletes who have been standing outside for years with torches and pitchforks.
Wave House San Diego is the centerpiece of a seven-acre beachfront property that has been entirely leased by Tom Lochtefeld and his associates at Wave Loch.
This left-hander is a beast of a wave”: 100,000 gallons of water flows at a maximum speed of thirty miles per hour over a carefully engineered soft-foam covered fiberglass shell to create a stationary tube and an endless ramp for practicing aerial maneuvers.

This idea of using nature's sonic waves to enhance plant growth and generate greater yields is proving to have remarkable potential.
All growers have to do, is expose their plants to a combination of oscillating high frequency sound, which is available on tape, and a nutrient spray.
The frequency used is a high frequency electromagnetic radiation wave developed from natural sounds and is similar to the frequency range of many bird calls, such as those made by swallows, martins, and warblers.

All indications are that BNW is just dead.) What's irksome is the abuse and disrespect the show got the past couple of years: It should have ended in a week's or month's grand closing with a media publicity campaign and celebration of the role it played in Canadian cultural life the past 20 years.
BNW is certainly old enough to be somebody's out of touch parent by now.
