Another lasting tribute to the legacy and sacrifice of Pacific Force submarines was unveiled in a ceremony this past Saturday at the Bowfin Submarine Memorial Museum when the Secretary of the Navy announced the name of the third Virginia Class submarine as USS HAWAII (SSN 776).
These two events bring together the past, present and future of submarines in the Pacific as veterans, active duty and residents of Hawaii gather to recall the sacrifices of submarine Sailors and to reflect on the importance of maintaining undersea supremacy.

Some officials say, however, that the usual underwater sea lanes used by U.S. submarines have been fully charted and it's not clear why the sub, which was apparently in transit from Guam to Australia, would have been operating in waters that were not adequately charted.

The Bronstein class ships operated the QH-50C DASH from commissioning and after their sonar upgrade to the SQS-26AX(R), received the QH-50D variant of DASH.
The desire to regain the speed yet maintain the ASW capabilities of the BRONSTEIN led to the development of the 19-foot-longer GARCIA class DE whose pressure-fired 1200 PSI boilers allowed their 2 Foster Wheeler/ de Laval geared turbines to generate 35,000 shp resulting in the 27 knots the Navy wanted.
The Bronstein class incorporated the same 600 PSI engineering plant as the Dealeys, but interestingly even though they were considerably larger, they were slightly faster than the DEALEY's as well, probably because the large bow-mounted sonar gave them a more efficient hull form.

A submariner's wife collected all the modern submariner slang she could find, investigated some of the origins, and had herself a 50+ page college English research paper (the Word document is here).
I was gonna do a post about USS Dolphin (AGSS 555), the U.S.'s only commissioned diesel submarine, getting ready to return to sea after her flooding casualty in 2002, but MT1(SS) beat me to it.
Thanks to the students of WCCC and other poor and working class people who are recruited to fight and die for EXXON and other corporations who earning megaprofits from their imperialist plunders.
