The Northeast was the first area of discovery in Brazil, roughly 1,500 Portuguese having arrived on April 22, 1500 under the command of Pedro Álvares Cabral at Porto Seguro, in the state of Bahia.
Brazil's Northeast region can be characterized as arid for relatively long periods of time in the interior of the continent, with the coast and the southern areas having a more humid climate.
The festival of São João (Saint John), one of the festas juninas, is especially popular in the Northeast, particularly in Caruaru, in the state of Pernambuco and Campina Grande, in the state of Paraíba.

The Northeast Brazil Shelf Marine ecoregion combines a wide continental shelf (up to 350 kilometers) and low levels of freshwater to allow for a variety of habitats including mangrove forests, fringing and barrier reefs, and the only atoll in the South Atlantic Ocean, Atol das Rocas.
Where the shelf narrows in the central section of this ecoregion, the substrate consists almost entirely of carbonate sediments and is impacted by the South Equatorial Current.

It is a great companion piece to the Lonely Planet program wherein Ian Wright does the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro but unfortunately, as far as I know, the Rio program has not made it to video tape as yet.
