Brazilian Flag Anthem - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Brazilian Flag Anthem, or Hino à Bandeira Nacional, is an hymn dedicated to the country's flag.
The anthem was presented by the first time in November 9, 1906 and was intended to be a replacement for the National Anthem.
The Flag Anthem (as all other patriotic anthems and hymns) was highly praised in the past, especially during the 1964-1985 dictatorship but has lately lost some of its appeal.

On the National flag is represented, rendered artistically, a view of the sky over Rio de Janeiro, with the constellation "Cruzeiro do Sul" [Southern Cross] at the meridian, imagined as seen by an observer placed on the vertical line including the zenith of that city, from outside the sphere seen on the flag.
They both trace their common ancestry to the flag of the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarve, which featured an armilliary sphere as supporter for the Portuguese coat of arms of the time, and which in turn was apparently used earlier as a symbol of the caravelles that sailed for Brazil.

A national anthem is a generally patriotic musical composition that is evoking and eulogizing the history, traditions and struggles of its people, recognized either by a nation's government as the official national song, or by convention through use by the people.
Anthems rose to prominence in Europe during the nineteenth century; the oldest song purporting to be a national anthem is the "Wilhelmus" from the Netherlands, written between 1568 and 1572 during the Eighty Years' War.
Anthems by their nature have to be brief (the average is about one minute in length), yet many, if not most, manage to make them musically significant, and a true representation of the nation's musical character.

The Brazilian national anthem (from Portuguese: Hino Nacional Brasileiro) was written by Joaquim Osório Duque Estrada, and the musical setting was composed by Francisco Manoel da Silva in 1822.
Several republicans suggested that the newly composed anthem commemorating the proclamation of the Republic should replace the music composed upon the foundation of the Empire, but Marshal Deodoro da Fonseca, head of the Provisional Government of the Republic, expressed his preference for the traditional anthem.
Brazilian law stipulates that only one stanza must be played in instrumental renditions of the anthem, but both must be sung in vocal performances.

Brazil's anthem was originally composed in 1822 (the year of independence) and first performed in 1831, but did not come into use until 1890, the year after the republic was established.
At first, the anthem was wordless, but a competition for lyrics was held in 1909, a winner was chosen and, to celebrate the centennial of independence in 1922, the words were officially adopted.
Brazil has several "patriotic songs" that are used as quasi-national anthems, the "Anthem for Independence" (the former national anthem), Anthem of the Proclamation of the Republic, Anthem to the Flag, and Song of the Expeditionary.

The status of the historic flag was reaffirmed in the 9 July 1947 state constitution, but a dispute over whether the flag should have 15 stripes or 13 led the constituent assembly drafting the constitution to leave it up to the new state legislature to pass an act on the matter more definitively.
