Brazilian Portuguese - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Brazilian Portuguese is a collective name for the varieties of Portuguese written and spoken by virtually all the 180 million inhabitants of Brazil and by a couple million Brazilian immigrants and temporary workers in other countries, mainly in Canada, United States, Portugal, Paraguay and Japan.
Portuguese in Brazil is a legacy of Portuguese colonization of the Americas.
For a time Portuguese coexisted with the Lingua Geral, a lingua franca based on Amerindian languages that was used by the Jesuit missionaries; as well as with various African languages spoken by the hundreds of thousands of slaves brought to the country between the 17th to 19th centuries.

Portuguese is ranked sixth among the world's languages in number of native speakers (over 200 million), and first in South America (186 million, over 51% of the population).
In the second period of Old Portuguese, from the 14th to the 16th century, with the Portuguese discoveries, the language was taken to many regions of Asia, Africa and the Americas (nowadays, the great majority of Portuguese speakers live in Brazil, in South America).
Portuguese is written with the Latin alphabet, and makes use of the acute accent, the circumflex accent, the grave accent, the tilde, and the cedilla, to denote stress, vowel height, nasalization, and other sound changes.

The Global Advisor Newsletter - Brazilian and European Portuguese
Brazilian Portuguese is an offshoot of the language of the mother country, Portugal.
Brazilian music is popular around the world and Portuguese speakers in many countries tune in to Brazilian soap operas (telenovelas), a fact that may explain why European Portuguese have an easier time understanding spoken Brazilian than the other way around.
In the case of Portuguese, European Portuguese is one of the languages of the EU, therefore it might be a requisite for export into Europe.

Re: European/Brazilian Portuguese   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
As a Brazilian native speaker, I’m not familiar with all the differences between Brazilian and European Portuguese.
If you are interested in both Brazilian and European Portuguese, there is a very good and fun dictionary on the differences between Brazilian and European Portuguese.
The dictionary was written in Portuguese by a well known Brazilian writer and journalist who lived in Portugal for two years and made notes of all the differences he came across while living in Portugal.

Differences between European and Brazilian Portuguese
Brazilian and European Portuguese are very far apart—from spelling to the use of verb tenses and terminology.
A Brazilian person can read a book or hear an interview on the radio—but that is the extent of the use of European Portuguese in Brazil.
In Portugal, Brazilian Portuguese would carry a lot of "mistakes" and awkward word choices and may often be considered an uncultured variation of the European form.

No Longer Camões Portuguese: Brazilian, European and African Portuguese Differences
In Brazilian Portuguese the "Você" is needed (A Brazilian reader would ask herself "who" if you eliminate it) for the sentence to be idiomatic.
African Portuguese vocabulary tends to follow European Portuguese vocabulary, with the addition of words relating to local foods, plants, animals, and places.
Brazilian and European Portuguese also differ in how sentences are put together, especially in terms of the use of articles and the choice of prepositions:

How and why to learn Portuguese
The basic is that Brazilian and European portuguese are very different to the ear.
Personnally, I find the nasal pronunciation of European portuguese especially fascinating, as it almost totally veils the similiraty of the language with spanish and makes it sound like a south slavic language.
Portuguese has silent consonants, but once you get their reason you will master it.

Differences between the two varieties of Portuguese   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
The strangest aspect of the whole event was that the original Portuguese was substituted by Brazilian Portuguese (dubbed), including the music from the soundtrack.
The biggest factor determining why a Brazilian cannot understand a Continental Portuguese speaker is in the pronunciation (phonetics), especially in the near suppression (unstressing) of the final vowel [i], written e.
It is because of this pronunciation--seen by the Brazilians to be closed-- which is not the fault of the Portuguese but only a natural linguistic phenomenon, that a Brazilian has difficulty in understanding his European cousins.

Given the high number of words that remain unaccounted for by an analysis that postulates moraic trochees for Portuguese, Lee (1994) revisits Camara (1953) and postulates that /e/, /a/ e /o/ in final position of nouns are thematic vowels and are outside the stress domain.
According to Lee, Portuguese stress domain is the root, not the stem, and primary stressing relies on a non-iterative iambic pattern.
In European Portuguese the beginning of a sentence tends to be prominent, as noticed already by Frota (1998) and Vigário (1998).

We argue that a representational analysis has the following advantages: (i) generating all the facts of Brazilian and European Portuguese without postulating any cases of absolute neutralization; (ii) not forcing the usage of the notion of directionality, thus implying a simplification of the phonological theory; and (iii) being able to generate variant forms in parallel.
Indeed, the assignment of secondary stresses in Brazilian and European Portuguese is clearly independent from primary stress.

Notes on European Portuguese   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Since the District of Vila Real is primarily a rural area, with more than seventy five per cent of its population living in centers with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants, much of the Portuguese spoken is that of a rural dialect, as opposed to the supposedly more refined speech of Coimbra and Lisbon.
One aspect of rural Portuguese, and one not limited to Vila Real, is the excessive use of titles for so-called superior people.
Another oddity for those Portuguese speakers not used to continental Portuguese is the use of nominal forms preceded by the article instead of the pronoun forms of treatment.

Foreign words in Brazilian and European Portuguese
Some people, especially from Portugal, say we, Brazilians, could simply invent a new word based on the Portuguese word: a word derived from 'mercado', for example.
I don't know if it can be a good new, but Brazilian Portuguese has shown it's very dynamic in spite of translating foreign words into Portuguese, including new verbs derived from foreign words: 'customização' and 'customizar' are new words derived from 'to costumize'.
In this case, I think these new words shouldn't be neglected by the purists, because there's no similar meaning in Portuguese, since they mean 'to personalize clothes according to what the customer want'.

The average Portuguese has absolutely no problems in understanding a Brazilian speaking, but the opposite is not so true.
The main reason is that people in Portugal hear spoken Brazilian on TV almost daily (mostly soap-operas), while a Brazilian will rarely hear spoken Portuguese.
On top of this, the Brazilian pronounciation is much more clear and open, while the Portuguese pronounciation tends to be more closed and difficult to understand.

The morphology and syntax of both varieties of Portuguese differ in many aspects.
There are many other differences between both varieties, like the loss of third person forms in imperatives and the reduced usage of inflected infinitives in BP, which deserve a larger and more detailed study.
But I hope this small paper is sufficient to show the main aspects of the Portuguese spoken on both sides of the Atlantic.
