Bread - Wikipedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Breads are a group of staple food-products prepared by baking, steaming, or frying a dough[?] consisting primarily of flour, water and optionally a leavening agent.
Owing to its high levels of gluten (which give the dough sponginess and elasticity), wheat is the most common grain used for the preparation of bread, but bread is also made from the flour of rye, barley, maize (or corn), and oats, usually, but not always, in combination with wheat flour.
Bread is one of the oldest prepared foods, dating back to the Neolithic era when, cereal grains and water were mixed into a paste and cooked.

Bread has been a staple of human diet in many civilizations as long as agriculture has been practised, and some hunter-gatherer peoples made it from crushed acorns or beech nuts.
Potato, banana, and cassava bread are among some local varieties, but most breads are made from fermented cereals which form glutens when mixed with water.
The earliest bread was unleavened and was made from a mixture of flour and water and dried in the sun on flat stones.

 Bread
Bread was formed in 1969, when a leading Los Angeles session musician, David Gates, was asked, by now legendary music figure Russ Regan, to produce a project featuring Rob Royer as vocalist for the group "Pleasure Faire".
It was in the context of this project that Gates, Griffin, and Royer, the nucleus of Bread, initially met, developed friendships, and decided to pool their talents.
Setting Bread aside, the band members took different directions and David Gates completed a couple of solo efforts, "First Album", in 1973, and "Never Let Her Go", in 1975.

Bread - Seventies Music at Randy's Rodeo   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Bread was certainly the most popular example to date of this oxymoronic genre, but they were hardly the first.
The growing disparity between Bread's image of themselves as serious rock musicians and the public's perception of them as sweet balladeers was thrown into stark contrast with their third album, Manna (1971).
Bread toured in support of the record, but, in Gates' own words, "It was worth a try, but once was enough." Tellingly, unlike the rest of Bread's original LP's, Lost Without Your Love has never been reissued on CD.

Bread, one of the most popular pop groups in the early '70s, spawned a string of melodic, mellow rock singles, all composed by keyboardist David Gates, a session musician and producer turned songwriter.
The band continued to produce records that contained hits, but as the band got more successful, tensions mounted and Griffin, who claimed that Gates and him had agreed when the band started to share the singles equally, was frustrated that all the singles were written by Gates.
He also tells me he's proud that someone would take the initiative to do a Bread tribute record, because he agrees the band is quite underrated, which is one of the reasons they agreed to do the tribute record.
