Breadboard - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A breadboard is a reusable solderless device used to build a (generally temporary) prototype of an electronic circuit and for experimenting with circuit designs.
However, breadboard prototyping techniques are still used for some specialised applications such as broadband RF circuits, or where software models of components are inexact or incomplete.
Optical breadboards (optical tables or optics benches) also exist in which there is a grid of holes, usually spaced an inch apart, in which optical mounts can be screwed in.

 OWEC - Breadboard
Support components of the energy converting assembly are affixed to the aluminum portion and a wave simulator servo system, for controlling driveshaft reciprocation length and frequency, is affixed to the plywood portion.
Due to the horizontal orientation of the breadboard and driveshaft, means for simulating effective buoyancy and weight forces were required.
The motor axle is perpendicularly mounted with a 15" diameter steel disk having six threaded holes, each 1" apart in radial alignment from hub to rim, for carrying a post.

To make a breadboard, an array of these clips is embedded in a plastic block which holds them in place and insulates them from each other, like this:
The breadboard lets us connect components together and by wiring the bus strips to the binding posts and the binding posts to the power supply, to connect the power supply to the circuit.
Now what we need is a way to bring connections from the rest of the instruments into the breadboard.

 Breadboard Sockets
They constructed their radio circuits on wooden breadboards, which allowed them room to mount such things as vacuum tube sockets and larger, heavy components with sufficient room between them, and to connect components from pin to pin of the different sockets in order to complete the circuit.
This is an underside view of the breadboard socket with the insulating layer of paper removed.
There are a number of variations on this breadboard socket arrangement, but they all serve the same functions of allowing individual components and ICs to be mounted on a stable platform, and then facilitating the interconnection of these components to form an electronic circuit that can be observed and tested while in operation.

Converting a circuit diagram to a breadboard layout is not straightforward because the arrangement of components on breadboard will look quite different from the circuit diagram.
The IC (chip) is a good starting point so place it in the centre of the breadboard and work round it pin by pin, putting in all the connections and components for each pin in turn.
Begin by carefully insert the 555 IC in the centre of the breadboard with its notch or dot to the left.

 What is a "Breadboard"?
Literally, a breadboard is a plank of wood intended for cutting bread on.
Bread boards came to be associated with electronics experimenters because they were inexpensive, sturdy and readily available, and it's easy to move components around on them.
Plain perfboard is cheap and simple for small projects, but due to the lack of copper patterns the wiring on them often becomes a rats nest of interconnected wires.

Breadboards come in many sizes and designs, but the one we will be using (Radio Shack part #) is ideal for the type of experiments we want to do.
The first step is to understand which holes on the breadboard are connected to one another by "traces" (metal conductors) hidden under the plastic.
Plus, breadboards are more expensive than pre-drilled circuit boards, and are never as sturdy and reliable as a soldered board.

A breadboard, also known as a plugblock, is a plastic unit that is used to create prototypes of your circuits when they are at the experimental stage.
Note though, that on a larger breadboard, like the one in figure 1, this will not be the case, and the electrical connection will be broken in the middle of each row.
If you continually leave breadboard open to the air, over time the holes will fill with dust which could reduce the effectiveness of the connection between the wires and the breadboard.
