  Mariah Carey
Carey co-wrote all of the compositions on her debut album with songwriter-producers such as Ric Wake and Rhett Lawrence, and would continue to co-write nearly all of her material for the rest of her career.
Carey and Mottola separated in 1997; although she had often projected the image of a happy marriage to the public, in reality she had felt emotionally and psychologically abused by Mottola, whom she often described as possessive.
Carey is credited as having a five- octave vocal range ; she can cover all the notes from the alto range leading to those of a coloratura soprano, and her vocal trademark is her ability to sing in the whistle register.

Rolling Stone : Mariah Carey: Biography
Carey debuted with an album of uplifting dance pop and R&B ballads, each song's composition cocredited to Carey and each providing an opportunity to unleash her wide vocal range.
Carey is credible as neither a diva nor a homegirl; her bloated "Can't Take That Away (Mariah's Theme)" is both self-indulgent and self-aggrandizing, and the spiteful "Did I Do That?," a nervy excoriation of her celebrity marriage, blames Mottola for making a fool of her.
Carey's career crashed and burned in a spectacularly center-stage fashion as she struggled to define herself post-Mottola and post-Columbia (she signed to Virgin and was notoriously bought out from her contract thanks to Glitter).

 Mariah Carey
One of the most commercially successful pop performers of the 1990s, vocalist Mariah Carey was the third child of fl/Hispanic aeronautical engineer Alfred Carey and Irish opera singer/voice coach Patricia Hickey -- a mix that made her the target of persistent racial prejudice throughout her childhood.
Carey's next two releases were given a slightly more restrained but still enthusiastic response: 1991's Emotions reaching #4 and earning her a fifth #1 single with the title track, while her 1992 MTV Unplugged EP reached #3 and featured a sixth #1 song in the form of the Jackson 5 cover I'll Be There.
The stress of her enormous celebrity inevitably caught up with Carey in the 00s, first revealing itself in the form of erratic behavior during personal appearances and culminating in a withdrawal from the public and a brief period of hospitalization at a psychiatric hospital.

Butterfly - Mariah Carey - Song Listings
Upon its release, Butterfly was interpreted as Mariah Carey's declaration of independence from her ex-husband (and label president) Tommy Mottola, and to a certain extent, that's true.
Butterfly is peppered with allusions to her troubled marriage and her newfound freedom, and the music is supposed to be in tune with contemporary urban sounds instead of adult contemporary radio.
Subsequent plays reveal that Carey's vocals are sultrier and more controlled than ever, and that helps "Butterfly," "Break Down," "Babydoll," and the Prince cover, "The Beautiful Ones," rank among her best; also, the ballads do have a stronger urban feel than before.

 Mariah Carey
Mariah Carey was initially dismissed as not really being an artist, because she was so young, popular, traditionally attractive, and married to the president of her record company.
Carey has written nearly all her own hits - actually, she does better with her own material than with cover versions, where she tends to stick too close to the original arrangements - and over the years has gotten more involved in production as well.
Produced by Carey and DJ Clue, "Loverboy" breaks the mold of her usual cotton candy opening singles: it's much harsher, with a sample of Cameo's bass-heavy 1986 hit "Candy" and - on the remix only - raps from Da Brat and Ludacris.

Butterfly (Mariah Carey song) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Butterfly" is a song written and produced by American singer Mariah Carey and Walter Afanasieff for Carey's seventh album Butterfly (1997).
It is a ballad combining elements of pop and gospel, but Carey had originally conceived it as a house record with David Morales titled "Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise)".
David Morales created several dance remixes of the song — in addition to the original version of "Butterfly", which is known as "Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise)" — among them the "Fly Away" club mix and "Def 'B' Fly" mix.

 #1's - Mariah Carey - Song Listings
Carey was fortunate enough to have nearly every single she released top the pop charts.
Since Carey's singles always dominated her albums, it comes as no surprise that #1's is her best, most consistent album, filled with songs that represent state-of-the-art '90s adult contemporary and pop-oriented urban soul.
That said, it isn't a perfect overview -- a couple of good singles are missing because of the self-imposed "#1 rule"; plus, the Ol' Dirty Bastard mix of "Fantasy" is strong, but fans familiar with the radio single will be disappointed that the chorus is completely missing on this version.
