Breaker Morant - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Morant emigrated to Australia in either 1883 or 1884 and settled in outback Queensland.
According to that account, Morant was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Bushveldt Carbineers on April 1, 1901; prior to that he had served in the South Australian Second Contingent for nine months with the rank of sergeant.
Morant's unit was very successful in eliminating roving bands of enemy commandos from their area, forcing the Boers to transfer their activities to the Bandolier Kop area, on the northern fringe of the Spelonken.

 Kershen on Breaker Morant
Breaker Morant is the beautifully scripted and photographed film of the court-martial of these three Australian officers by a British Court-Martial.
Morant admitted disdainfully that the execution did not look like the Court-Martial, but he reminded the Court that war is not a Court-Martial and soldiers do and are expected to use their British Enfield Caliber 303 rifles to kill the enemy.
Breaker Morant is a beautiful anti-war statement--a plea for the end of the intrigues and crimes that war entails.

Morant, Handcock, Witton and their troops lined these guys up by the roadside, made them dig their own graves and then killed them one by one.
The backers of Breaker Morant reckon that this was a kangaroo court set up by Lord Kitchener, who wanted to transfer blame for the excesses of his army onto this bunch of colonial irregular soldiers who, well, from a British point of view, were expendable.

“Breaker Morant” (1980), based on a true story, is a courtroom drama set during the Boer War, one of the many charming affairs in which the British Empire indulged before finally giving up the ghost as the world’s last, lingering colonial power.
Morant is played by Edward Woodward (better known to pop culture addicts as The Equalizer) who absolutely steals the show.
But “Breaker Morant” is no “My Cousin Vinny.” The deck is stacked against the defense from the very start, and Beresford never seriously tries to sell us on the possibility of a happy ending.

Breaker Morant is a top-notch film centered around the court-martial of three Australian soldiers from a British combat unit who allegedly shot to death a handful of Boers and a German missionary in revenge for the murder and mutilation of the unit's captain.
Edward Woodward as Breaker Morant (named for his breaking of horses in Australia) convincingly portrays this erudite man's fiery personality and his folk hero dimensions.
That two men were executed and one sentenced to life imprisonment for the errors of their superiors is but another example of injustice in the annals of military history.

This stern measure (the execution of Handcock and Morant) shows more clearly than volumes of argument could do how high was the standard of discipline of the British army, and how heavy was the punishment, and how vain all excuses, where it had been infringed.

Many anti-war films work on the feeling that war is fundamentally absurd; that both the rules and the actions of war are beyond the rational scope of civilized humanity.
Such a belief is powerfully stated in the 1979 Australian film Breaker Morant.
While that movie had a fairly clear definition between the villain (Humphrey Bogart's mad captain), and the good guys (most of the men who orchestrated the mutiny), and also had justice properly served during its court-martial, Breaker Morant does not have such a clear-cut depiction.
